Looking for advice about neutering or not....

I know it is right to neuter your animals. We have all our other animals spayed and neutered, but my boyfriend and I are very hesitant to get Dozer spayed. We just don't think we would be able to handle the loss if something was to happen during surgery. And if something was to happen we would also not be able to afford to get another puppy for probably a few years and I know how much my boyfriend and I already love this guy. The sweet little man is on my lap as we speak. So anyways, would we be considered bad people if we chose not to get him neutered at all. We have no intention on breeding him or showing him, but we just want to avoid losing him. And we're terrified about what can happen. So by not neutering him are we being bad parents and neglecting him? Just wanted to know. I know all of you on here are the experts and we just want to do what's best for our boy. Thanks.

Neutering

Health reasons, maybe, maybe not. I dont know enough about it. Behavioral reasons, dog to dog aggression is a strong possibility, especially in a multi-dog household. Its not something that I would want to risk developing.

Good luck

What ever you decide just research it first so

you can make a well informed decision.

You definitely are not a bad person :)

If only other dog owners cared about their dogs as you do. We all know that there are those people who let their unaltered dogs run around like crazy.
You are not one of them!

You're definitley not alone! I imagine with a female

it is even more scary cuz I know their surgery is more invasive. I couldn't imagine losing this little guy so soon. My heart would break. It's a struggle my boyfriend and I are trying to make a decision about. Do you have pictures of your girl so I can see her?

I understand what you're going through

We have a female and I'm so worried about getting her spayed. I've been doing alot of reading about how Bulldogs don't always do well when they're put under and it scares me to death.

I love Yuki

and so does my son. He tells me almost everyday now, "I want a Pekingnese Mom". LOL...me too, me too, but not just any Peke, I want Yuki.

Those pictures are great...I especially like the second one. It takes a manly man to wear pink like that.

Ultimately with Dozer, you and your boyfriend have to do what you think is best. Maybe you should take your BF and talk with the vet about the risks and benefits of neutering. If you have a good vet that you respect, that should help.

Also, anyone know anything about laser surgery neutering?

I know it's a new thing that is out, and I have heard it being used with cats, but not much with dogs. Anyone had this type of procedure done with their dogs? I heard it's a lot faster so there is less time under and less bleeding and a decrease in the risks of complications. Thanks

There's pics in my response for you Nikki.

Re: I'm not an expert.

I don't think your a bad person, if you are responsible (which I believe you are) with your intact male.

I have never had a male dog, so I am not in anyway an expert on male dog's health issues. I do know that spaying a female before her first heat cycle can greatly reduce health risks later in life. So, I guess I am basing my neutering opinions on responsibilty, and not health factors. I'm sure there are some health and behavioral things to consider, but I don't have facts.

That's how my boyfriend feels

I'm really at a toss up. Like I know it's the right thing to do, but at the same time we don't want to lose our dog. It's eating away at me and I just don't know what to do. And technically, it's my boyfriends dog so if he says no, it might be that way, though I doubt he would do that if I was totally for it. ugh, it's just so hard to decide! It's like putting your kid through a life or death situation.

Good points there Nikki

It's just so hard to imagine not having him around already. We love the little cuddle bug so much. In the beginning I was all for it because I know about the risks involved with not neutering (higher risks of cancers and such) but my bf is scared to death and doesn't want to lose his little boy and he's making me have doubts! But I knew you all would help me to clear my head. I know it's ultimately the right thing to do, it's just scary and hard.

Now as for Yuki how about I just show you some pictures instead These are some older ones from when his hair was longer.

I'm not an expert.

I'm just one of those "bad people" you refer to for not neutering my dog. I don't think the evidence is compelling enough to justify the procedure based on health benefits alone. I'm also not inclined to give in to political correctness (God forbid that I have an intact male!)...which is rampant where I live.

Thanks for the input

I will discuss it further with my boyfriend. I think it's something that should be done but he's making me feel guilty because he's so scared of losing him. And now he's causing me to have doubts. But I agree that in the end it will be better for him.

My opinion...

Yes, there are risks to the surgery, but if it was me I would definitely have him neutered. Especially, considering you aren't going to be showing or breeding him...there is no reason not to. I understand the worry, but saying that you wouldn't be able to afford another puppy for years shouldn't be a deciding factor. Even if you lost him during surgery, or any other horrible thing a new puppy can never replace him anyway. You would love it, but it wouldn't be Dozer.

Now, now that I have given you my opinion, will you send me Yuki?

Neutering

I would recommend getting Dozer neutered. There really is no reason not to. If you have a great vet (I recommend a bully specialist) there shouldn't be any problems. You don't want to go to just any vet or one you know nothing about. Getting Dozer may help prolong his life.

Bailey was neutered at 6 months and had no problems at all. I checked him in at 8 AM and had him home by 3:30 PM. I'm glad it was done.
