In light of the terrible tragedy that happened to Cooper...if

any of you want to read some info that might be helpful about vaccinations, here are links. I think educating ourselves is essential.
Remember to always discuss your concerns with your vet. If your vet isn't open to minimally vaccinating your pet and you believe in it, you can find a vet who agrees with your beliefs.

Actually, it is all the same, the only difference is how

often each state requires it. At least that is what I read during my research.

Do some research on the bordatella vaccine...

there is some evidence it seems that it isn't necessary and it only covers 2 out of several types of kennel cough. Just read read read as much as you can.

I will be sure to ask that next time.

Thanks for that info!

I believe it is a bit over much as well!

I really dont know the answer why GA requires rabies every year but if I remember correctly I think SC was the same when we lived there as well! well maybe not? its been a few years! but in MD I did not have to have her vaccinated yearly for rabies!

the DHLPP is one that caught my eye that is scary and I am having a hard time finding supporting info on the web sad.gif I do not want to continue to give Rosie these vaccines that are NOT needed. She has already had cancer once and if these vaccines pose a higher risk of it coming back I want toprevetn that to my best ability any way possible. Rosie is not around a lot of other dogs and she may or may nto be borded in Feb for a few days so I can understand the Bordetella for that part.

One thing to make sure

is which rabies vaccine is used. I believe their are two or three versions and one is good for three years so that would be my question. I would not want my dog vaccinated yearly with a three year vaccine.

I don't know what choice you really have about the rabies

but the DHLPP is the one I'd ask about. I believe it's the "l" portion of it that's dangerous. As far as the bordetella, does she have a lot of contact with other dogs, like boarding, grooming, dog parks, etc? Talk to your vet about the necessity of that one too. I wonder why GA mandates yearly rabies when other states go every 2 or 3?

just what I needed to read

I was wondering about a titer test. Not knowing if Nacho was ever vaccinating, this will be useful when we go in this weekend.

thanks!

Question about vaccinating!!!

Here in GA it is law to vaccinate for rabies every year. Now I will honestly admit that I am not familiar with vaccines and their reactions after reading the article am I over vaccinating for the rabies?

I have a List of reminders here for Rosie of shots they want her to have let me know if this is safe or over doing it??

Rabies due 1/2010 last given 1/17/09
Bordetella due 3/2010 last given 9/26/09
DHLPP Annual Due 9/2010 last given 6/28/08

Céline and Angel Stella's picture

I'll print those out and read them tonight

In recent years, Stella seem to be taking the vaccines harder than before (more lethargic for a couple of days). We've never had a bad reaction though.

My vet always staggers the vaccines though.

I live in GA and give 3 yr rabies

Our first rabies as a puppy is the one year and then when they go back at 15-18 mths they get a 3yr. I've never had a problem doing this.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

correct, the 3 year rabies comes from the same vial as the 1 yea

A 3 year rabies is not some super dose.
The reason they extended the time frame for rabies was becasue titers showed that the vaccine was still good after one year. Some dogs were fine at 5 years, some only at 3. So somewhere along the line they figure a time frame that will cover them legally. 3 years was it. Maybe soemday in the future more vets and counties will accept titers too!

Ok good to know

I may have read it wrong but still if some states require two or three year and some one and it is all the same vaccine then that is crazy

RosieBeGood's picture

Thanks for that

I am trying to read up on things now and it seems the DHLPP shot isnt necessary. I will definitely get Rosie the Titer test before her next set of vaccines are due!
