letting gumbo roam

I have a couple of questions. Just got our puppy "Gumbo" last month and this board was a big help getting started, so thought I'd come back for more help.

Gumbo is great, potty training is going well w/ a few accidents here and there. Does well at night. starting to follow a few commands, life is good.

However, right now my wife is working part time, in the fall she is considering going back to teaching full time, but 7:15 am - 3:45 pm seems like an awful long time to leave Gumbo in her kennel especially after being in it all night. Question for those who work is at what age will she be ok to roam the house, or maybe even block off a portion of the house w/out having accidents or chewing everything. She will be about 8 months old.

As long as I'm digging for ingo, a 2nd question: Gumbo has that cute wrinkle on top of her nose that you see so often. her vet claims this is going to be a health issue that restricts breathing and that he should basically give that wrinkle a face lift after she gets a little older. I think the guy doesn't know what he is talking about, but he claims to have treated EB's before. I will definetly get a 2nd opinion if I even consider it, but has anyone heard of this?

sorry for the long poshttp://www.network54.com/Realm/tmp/1262965017.JPG Gumbo the day we brought her home

I know someone who had a bulldog......

who had his nose rope removed. It was awful! Don't do it. Just keep up with keeping it clean and fresh happy.gif.

I cannot imagine how removing would help a bulldog breath better...the breathing problems are on the INSIDE!

I think you need a new vet...

What?!

I would NOT trust that vet with my dog for ANYTHING. That is absurd!

I think blocking off a small room or if that's not possib;e an x=pen would be a good idea when you have to leave for work all day.

Re: the nose rope?

she's pretty good...I mean, she still is very puppy with the chewing and a few #1 accidents, never #2. She is only 13 weeks though

the nose rope?

just keep a close eye on it, keep it clean and dry..Never heard of them pinning it..Maybe find a meet up group in your area of bullies and find out who is the Bullie vet,I was lucky, mine is 5 minutes away...
I'm not sure on the roaming, how is he now? When they are bored, is usually when they tear things up, at least mine were that way..

much bully love~Christine, Dupree, Marley and Savannah

thanks to all

good stuff on letting her get some space. figured that vet was clueless, will definetly go to a specialist for anything out of the ordinary.

any recommendations if anyone lives around New Orleans, saw that there was one vet listed on this site

sounds like he is just seeing $$$..as some vets do with

our bulldogs!!!
Sorry I would look for a different vet for regular stuff or drive the 50miles..
We have to drive 75 miles (one way)just for the regular stuff and 5 hrs for bulldog stuff!!!
Good luck..

Re: Good call

yeah, we do, but there is really only one vet clinic in town that has about 3 vets in it...I don't think he is a bad guy, the clinic came recommended by a lot of friends who go there and he seems fine for regular vet visits.

Just don't think he has a clue what he is talking about when it comes to this, perhaps I am losing something in translation as most of this is 3rd party through my wife and he gives more of a "ya know, down the road we're going to need to take care of that" than it being a need asap.

Probably just a case of a doc acting like he knows more about something than he does...didn't really put too much stock in it, but thought I would pass it by the board as clearly they have more experience w/ EB thatn he does

No way...

Cash has a pretty big nose rope and believe me.. it doesn't cause him any trouble breathing!! The worst part is keeping it clean but really not a big deal.

Good call

We have a regular vet for regular stuff (ear infections, swallowing something she shouldn't, vaccines, etc.) and a bulldog vet for major issues. Ours is a 6-hour drive - so you're pretty luck ! happy.gif

I don't much like the sound of this guy, actually. I've never even heard of what he's saying - would he do the same to pugs or boxers that also have nose ropes? Do you have another option for a regular vet?

Re: letting gumbo roam

You can put her crate in an excersise pen set up, This way if she has an accident it will be concentrated in that area and not on your couch or bed or elsewhere while your away.

In my opinion I would run like a gazelle from the Vet that said that about your Bulldogs nose rope. I seen the picture of your baby and at that age her nose rope is NOT overdone. Their nose ropes should never be surgically corrected for the reason that (Pardon my terminology) Quack said.
Look for Bulldog Vet's from this listing:
http://bulldogsworld.com/BULLDOG_VETERINARIANS.html
If anything, down the road people (Not saying your baby will need this, but other's) have had to get "Nare" surgery done to help widen their Bulldogs nostrils to help them breath through their nose better but the nose rope is never touched.

.. I think its time to find a new vet

sounds like he's fishing for money!

I think it's okay for you go block off an area or get her an x pen for when you aren't home. But honestly, she's probably just going to sleep while you're away happy.gif

Re: A facelift? Good grief!!

thanks for the help, yeah thought the whole thing was kind of wierd. I say "facelift" b/c I don't know a better way to describe it, but basically wants to pin the wrinkle back. About 80% of the EB pictures i see disagree w/ him, but he claims that with the extra pressure on the nostrils, the dog will basically be semi-hyperventilating all the time, hence the snorting/snoaring/heavy breathing

That's what I told my wife, there is a vet referenced on this site that is about 50 mi away, so I think we will go to him for anything out of the ordinary

That's craziness

Unless that wrinkle is causing major problems then dont touch it. keep it clean. I would say at 8 months you could block off an area with an x pen.

A facelift? Good grief!!

This guy defiintely does not know what he's talking about. The nose wrinkle is something to keep an eye on (i.e. keep clean) but don't let him touch it! I would recommend finding a "bulldog vet" for issues other than regular maintenance.

We let Stella roam starting at 6 months, but she was an extra good puppy. I think you could certainly block off a part of the house, maybe with an x-pen when she's 8 months.

Your vet

is an idiot.
