OK so we found a most excellent dog park and Angus Loves it. He plays so well with all the other dogs. And the smal speedy ones like him to chase them. He is a hit!!!
My qestion is,,, well,,,, how do i say this,,,,,, HE is a HUGE BUM BUM SNIFFER. Also a PEE PEE licker...
to think I was trying to keep him away from the comunity water, so he wouldnt catch germs from other dogs slobers. It worries me. I mean he is all about a bum licking and some dogs just roll over an let him go to town. Of course we pull him off as soon as he starts but CAN HE GET SICK FROM THIS??? As soon as we get home I wash his face but I am worried for him.
Whew!!!I
I just figured that he had not been around many dogs until last week. And all he likes to do if "Snif and Lick BUM" So maybe he will get over it! He has so much fun that we felt bad depriving him all this time. He is now 15 months old. After the attack I didnt want him or I afraid of other dogs. It has been good for all of us. People there are real nice and there are 3 different sections at this park:Big dog, Small Dog, Med Dog parks!!!
Thanks for the support all of you are so great!!!
dog park
sure he can get sick. he can get sick from just being in the area with other dogs but, germs aren't always bad
don't worry and have fun. the only thing i would worry about is a not so happy dog whose getting his bum licked!
liz
Normal social behaviour
and nothing to worry about. Dogs do sniff each other bum to learn who the other is, how high they are ranked and or maybe even check if a heat is due.
Living is dangerous, so I can't garantee you that he'll never pick something up, but if your dog is current on his shots and is regurlarly threated for fleas, you don't have to worry.
My dog Lucky (and the ones before him) were all their life taken to parks and meet other dogs. They had an occassional touch of Kennel Cough, or a virus that was going around, but nothing worse.
Some girls do like their bum licked, and just let him go on. If they don't like it, they will tell! Don't interfere if that happens! It sounds Angus is good at this job!
Have fun, and enjoy Angus having fun!
Oh, that is such a sick question!! How dare you!!
Gotcha! Just kidding. Angus' behavior is completely normal. That's how dogs exchange business cards, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
As for catching something, I could be mistaken here, but I suspect that's it even more risky for them to lick or sniff around each other's mouths. I guess it's a risk to take a dog out anywhere, just as it is for a person to go anywhere. The risks probably are higher in dog parks, but maybe that kind of exposure also helps them build up their immune systems.
Which makes me wonder: why aren't doctors sick 365 days out of the year?? I mean, they have patients coming in almost every day who have the flu or a cold or something contagious.
