is it required by law to license a pet even if they don't go outside?

i remembered that you only need to have your dog licensed if you take them outside like to a public place? now seems the city is sending out letters asking pet owners to pay a licensing fee plus a late fee if we own the dog for over 30 days. your feedbacks please.

I live in Parker CO

Dogs and cats in Parker don't have license fees . However, an ID tag is required to be on the dog or cat at all times.

Here in Ladneer (near vancouver)

you must licence you dog. It does not matter if s/he never goes out. I think that if they don't know that you have a dog then how can they make you licence it. Last year the licence officers went door to door, and when they came to our house Buttercup bas barking her head off- kinda hard to say that you don't have a dog lol

they know because they get the info from vet

i recently took my boys to the vet for their 3 year rabies shots and that is why they sent me the letter that i'm require to get a license for the furkids. They are just enforcing this law now. I've had dogs for a very long time and the last time I was required to get the license was for my shepherd and it's been 28 years and I paid for the license for 2 years and then they never sent me a letter to pay for the renewal. It was dropped for a very long time and now they are just enforcing this law because they said on the news they are low on money and too many dogs are ending up in shelter.

In Montgomery County, PA it is $6.00 for a spayed

or neutered dog. Because I am a senior, I only pay $4.00 per dog.

i live in CA and never did they send me this notice

until it was in the news recently. i tried to contact them and the answering machine said they are in a low budget with not enough staff and cannot answer my call. only recently i took my dog to the vet due to his skin problem so they must have gotten my info from the vet and then the letter said i have to show proof that he is neutered to pay a reduced fee of $20 for one year or if he is not neutered then it's $60 plus a late fee of $15 since I have my dog for more than 30 days. i understand there is this law way back but it wasn't enforced until recently since the city is low on fund and i don't mind paying the license fee, but charging me the late fee is ridiculous!

In Montgomery Co. Ohio

A single dog license has gone up from $10 several years ago to $20 a year now. I get a packet of 5 as a Kennel License for $100. Even though I hate to buy the licenses, I rationalize it that it provides the County with revenue to run the shelter and pay the officers salaries. That makes them available IF I ever need them.
I've never had a dog of mine get loose, but have had quite a few strange dogs show up here. A few have had tags on them and a quick call to the County gets an officer here to give them a ride home. Two dogs in particular 'visit' often and now I have their owner programed into my phone.

our state now

when you have a rabie shot done, sends it to the town , thus making you liscense them, even though my dogs never leave my property.

Not sure why this is an issue... it's a whopping $6.00 a year he

happy.gif Can't say if it's something that can be pursued legally, but they certainly aren't strict about it. Vets never seem to care.

The risk is if the dog escaped and was impounded or worse, bit someone. Then the town would probably get riled up. happy.gif

I searched and searched

and I can not find any info on dog licenses where we live, and since we have lived here for 11 years and have taken our dogs to the vet for rabies vaccines, I guess it's just not required where I live.

it is the law here in Ontario

different price depends if the dog is spayed or not
neutered does not matter but spaying does..go figure..??
there is a pretty hefty fine here if you do not register your dogs and get caught

This depends entirely on where you live

Even if your pet doesn't go outside, what happens if it gets out and wanders away?
but, every city/county has teir own rules about this.

Unless you can prove that no one besides you enters

your premises (house and yard) and that your dog never leaves the property, even to go to the vet, you are potentially exposing your dog to the community at large, albeit infrequently perhaps. There are diseases like Rabies that threaten the general population and your dog should be vaccinated to protect him and us. You probably cannot license your pet without the rabies vaccination, but some vets will vaccinate without requiring you to purchase the license. Most communities give a discounted license rate if the pet is spayed/neutered and perhaps a second discount if you purchase multiple years. happy.gif
