Injured Eye...Prissy... PLUS, a Henry allergy question (long)

ok...
First Henry-
Henry has always licked/chewed his feet. I had no idea this could be allergies until the other day. I gave him some Beneryl a couple of times but honestly cant tell if it has helped. He hasnt been taking it constantly so I cant tell.

I had to rush Prissy to the vet this morning and asked him about Henrys feet/allergies and he said: If it were allergies, he would prolly be itching all over. He gave me some pills to give him when it is bad. (the licking/chewing) They are called Hydroxyzine. Any thoughts?

Second- Miss Priss.
Prissy has been squinting one eye off and on all weekend. I noticed yesterday evening when I looked closer that it was red and watery as well. She was dirty around her face so I bathed and blew her dry at 1:00 AM to get a better look. Also, I thought it might make her feel better. Thats when we saw that she has a dent in the middle of her eyeball on the black part of her eye. A dent. A chunk right out of it.

It was clouding up around it so off to the vet we went this morning first thing. I was racking my brain trying to remember if anything happened that could have done this. Friday, my 4 yr old was holding the metal screen door open for the dogs to come in. As Prissy was running in after Henry, Pete swung the door open wider and clocked Prissy in the head. She yelped and ran off. I grabbed her up and checked her out but she looked ok at the time. I think it may have gotten her in the eye. Its the only thing I can think of.

Anyway, I have ointment to put in her eye 4 times a day and she goes back first thing Wed. morning. He has no idea if it will heal or not. The clouding is slowly spreading out, it looks like. I asked if she was going blind in that eye and he said he cant tell me anything right now.

I just ache for her so bad I could cry. THis is my little baby. She is 15 weeks, weighs 6 pounds even and is so young and tiny. All she wants is to be between my feet at all times.

I have her hair pulled back to keep it out of her eyes. Is there anything else I should be doing to help her?

i'm thinking about you

Wow, sounds hectic over there!
I hope that your two feel better soon...sorry I don't have any real advice.

About Prissy's eye...

this weekend at the dog show I went to I met a woman who had a little lhasa apso with only one eye... she told me that the dog had done it to herself when she was only about 3 months old (now a couple of years old) by scratching it with her paw and she ended up losing the yey BUT she is as content as can be... anyway my point with this little anecdote is to wonder if it's something that she could have done herself??? And if, GOD FORBID!!!!, she doesn't completely recover from this... to point out an example of a completely happy (and clueless to the whole issue) doggie with a similar situation... Although it sounds like you've caught it in time and it's being treated promptly.

Re. Henry - I really don't know what to tell ya other than - have you considered soaking his paws in water with some vinegar or with some oatmeal to soothe them?

Hope they both get better soon. Much love your way!

Prissy's eye

Wendy, I experienced something similar back in '97 with my first bully, Buster. He was playing with our other bully, Sarah, and she caught him in the eye with her toenail. Her toenail punctured his cornea almost all the way through. My regular vet, who would usually handle a corneal ulcer with no problem, sent us immediately to the ophthalmalogist. Buster was in surgery the next day for a corneal graft. The doctor used a small piece of skin from his third eyelid and grafted it onto the puncture so it would heal. The surgery cost $1200. He had to wear an e-collar and use ointment for about a month following surgery. Afterwards, he was perfectly fine. However, the grafted piece of skin would always remain on his cornea. It looked a little strange if you looked closely, but otherwise it wasn't very noticeable.

Best wishes to Prissy!

Yes he did do the flourescent test...

to see where and how big it was. It just makes my skin crawl for her to think of how much that must hurt. She is so little and I feel so bad for her. Every time I stop walking she lays down on top of my feet. My baby girl.

And of course Henry wants in on the action too! He follows her, following me. We have quite the train from one end of the house to the other- just for a load of laundry!

Thanks! SHe goes to the vet 1st thing tomorrow morning to see how its doing, so I have my fingers crossed.

Wendy....

Norbert had a scrap on his eyeball a couple of years ago. He was doing his pig imitation (rooting in the weeds) and poked his eye probably with a stick. The vet used the green eye dry and light to find the ulceration and we used eyes drops (can't remember what they were and I'm add work so can't look in the file) it healed fine. He also had a small cloudy spot, probably a little larger then a pin head before the drops. He was a good boy and didn't need a cone because he didn't rub it.
Did your vet do the green eye dye test to look at the damage or ulceration?

We hope everything works out with her eye.

We will be thinking about her.

Gracie's on hydroxyzine

Just finished up her first prescription this morning. She's still scratching a bit more than she probably should, but she hasn't scratched herself raw anywhere since starting it a couple weeks ago.

I was on hydroxyzine last year following a surgery, but not for allergies. It was supposed to help reduce the itching caused by strong pain meds while simultaneously acting as a synergist for them (making them considerably more powerful without increasing dose). It seemed to work pretty well and I didn't notice any side-effects (of course I was probably too stoned on those pain meds to notice anything other than large growths or limbs spontaneously falling off! )

Poor Prissy-I hope her eye clears up!

Poor little girl....

...Oh Wendy.. I'm so sorry for you and your little one.. ..it's so hard to know how they feel, if they hurt, can (..or can't see..) or what is going on with them!! Hopefully the eye will heal.. ..on the very center of the eye is the cornea and they can get scratched even in humans and heal up nicely. We will be thinking about you and Prissy.. ..and sending Shi Tzu prayers for your little one!! Keep us updated!!

Wellness has a Fish and Sweet Potato.....

Chalmer's been on it for a couple of weeks now. Haven't really seen an improvement yet but I've been told it can take several weeks to make a difference. Hope this helps.

She has one but... (pic)

it isnt long enough to be long and flowing yet but we are getting there. Right now it is at a length thats long enough to be pulled back and stay for a few hours but still short enough that is gradually pulls out of the band.

It is her black eye that is hurt. Im so worried about her.

Thanks! Let me know...

about the food brands if you dont mind.

Does she have a ponytail?

I hope she gets better soon.

about henry..

the itching/licking feet is almost definitly allergies everytime! if he's just working on one foot, it may be behavioral! if not, allergies!!! what do you feed him? may i suggest a fish/ sweet potato diet. it has worked wonders for rosie!!!! (i think she is allergic to poultry) i can reccommend a few brands if you'd like! so sorry about prissy! i wish i could help but i've never dealt with anything like that before. all i can think of is... scratches in our eyes heal, my dad(a deisel mech.) has gotten metal chunks in his eye(and taken out) a couple of times and he sees fine, well with the help of his reading glasses but that has nothing to do with the metal!!!age!!!hehe! hope everything comes out alright!
