I went to my first Dog Show this weekend...

and it was a blast! I ended up going both days (the first one I dragged my husband to it and then my mom, tee hee hee, but they both loved it too). I got to see the bullies, even met a relative of Leeloo's who won yesterday! I was especially fascinated by the Obedience trials. I want Leeloo to do that too! She's already enrolled in puppy class for a few weeks from now, but do you guys think it's feasible to get a bullie to follow such good direction? All the dogs there were labs, collies, large poodles, etc... no bullies!?! Anyway, if you haven't been to a Dog Show yet, you should! It's a whole nother world, and it's fun! You can check out the schedules on www.infodog.com, there's a way to search by state.

Hugs!

Aren't they great??

I went to my first one last year and am hooked for life. I love seeing all the bullies, and the other dogs too. And love the vendors, I start putting money aside soon as one is over with for the next one. If you have not been to a bullie specialty you are in for a treat there.

Thanks for the advice - you and Charly will be our inspiration..

and I'm glad you mentioned that book, I had seen it at the bookstore and wasn't sure if it would be any good. Right now I'm reading "the other end of the leash" and love it!

not Sue, but

you might try some books especially since you're done so great teaching her so many commands already! wow! I'm feeling behind on the 8-ball now!

Bulldogs in obedience

Bulldogs can do very well in obedience. If trained properly, with lots and lots of praise, treats and toys they work better than Border Collies and GSD's (no I'm not biased, I know first handed!).

The trick is to find your dogs soft place. What does he really likes? Food, a special toy, a special place to rub?

Use positive methods only. Rewards, whatever reward you use isn't important, are the key to a working Bulldog. Don't believe the crab about "will to please" to get a Bulldog working, your dog will do it only to please himself. Yes, if you insist, he will do it, but very slowly.

Fun, games and loads of praise are the way to have a Bulldog to work. Find a trainer who believes in your dog, look into clickertraining and don't ever use force, load voices, chokechaines, electric collars and other ways to hurt or force your dog.

By the way, my Charly was the second Bulldog in Holland to ever gain GG 1 (FCI-rules) and Lucky is competing in competitive obedience and doing very well.

Good luck and have fun.

By the way, read "So your dog is not Lassie" from Betty Fisher.

Sue, a question?

I'm new to this whole dog thing, especially Bullies. I have a 16 year old Golden Retriever I rescued from the pound when she was a year old, but Ruby is my first puppy ever. She is extremely smart, at 14 weeks she already know sit, down, shake, high 5, roll over (although she hates it), and back-up. Where do I begin to train her for obedience? We live in a pretty small area, I am trying to get her into puppy kindergarten, but nowhere has enough puppies to have a class, and she is almost too old. I think she has the potential to do really well, and her mom was an obedience champion.

Bulldogs & Obedience

Hi,
My first bulldog, Dudley, achieved 2 obedience titles, the Canine Good Citizen and then the Companion Dog.

My present bully, Opal, has her Canine Good Citizen.

You won't see many bulldogs in obedience but it certainly can be done.

Dog shows are a blast.

Re: I went to the one in

We live in Pasadena and both my wife and I work at Caltech in computers. We just bought, a year ago, a great little California Bungalow, built in 1910.

I went to the one in

Miami (where I now live) but was living in LA just prior to moving here for 3 year. Where do you live?

Re: I went to my first Dog Show this weekend...

I also went to my first dog show this weekend in Pasadea. It was great to see all the bullies. Now my wife thinks she may want to show out new little puppy someday. (pics soon!)

Yes Bullies can do obediance.

Josie loves the obediance ring any times she sees the obstical cource she runs to it and forgets all about the show ring. Her heart isn't in the conformation ring . I really need to do more training on her.
