I took Porky to the vet for his eye. The vet said

that he either needs to lose at least 10lbs or have Entropian surgery. He said the weight gain is making his face a bit bigger and his eyes curl in on his eye. He gave us some cream to put in his eye to help so it does not irritate him so much.
I am, at this point trying to get him to lose the weight.
Any thoughts or advice?

some heads develop up to 4yrs old

it depends on the lines. I would get a 2nd opinion before any surgery unless i was very comfortable with my vet and the amount of bulldogs in his practice.

My vet i trust 100%, you go in his office and you see bulldog, i dont think i have ever been in the office where i didnt atleast see 1 bulldogs.

He will be 2 on Jan 7th

Is this still in the growing stages?

Amy's Sig Pic

how old is he

as the head grows the face and eyes change. DO not do surgery until he is grown out of the puppy stage as he may not need it.

Thanks

I am going to try the ointment and diet first and then see how he does. He is a bit overweight. But if I see anything change def off to the ophthalmologist!

Amy's Sig Pic

really

I have nver heard that said before, I don't see how extra weight would make his eyelid curl in, maybe you could take Porkchop to see an opthamologist, I know Lily had her work done as did my daughters bully, how had both eyes done top & bottom, oh and twhen we were there he popped a cherry eye, all healed very nicely, good luck

Definatly!

I know I do not want to risk his eyes. Thanks for the advice! I will let you know how he is progressing.

Amy's Sig Pic

Hopefully

it all works out. i would give it a few days on the ointment and try taking a few pounds off. If you notice him squinting to the point he wont open the eye though or his eye looks foggy I would get him to the opthomologist.

Jacinda and the bullies's picture

I always take mine to an Opthamologist for any eye issues

Really, the Opthamologist is no more expensive than a bulldog Vet. And believe me, they see lots of bulldogs.

Hey Tom

In the eye that he is having the problem I can see no other swelling or anything. I can see the fur touching his eye. He will blink it more often and sometimes some discharge will come out. He is doing great with the ointment! So I am really hoping it will continue to improve. We do know a great Opthamologist that has already seen Jazzy when she had Distichia (sp?)
We may end up going to see him if this does not work out....our vet is a great bully vet and he is just trying to avoid surgery. He likes to have surgery as the last option if at all possible.

Amy's Sig Pic

Poor Porky

That sounds odd, but I guess it's possible. It's just diet and exercise. Lots and lots of exercise. happy.gif

great idea...I took a pug to one of them..they are awsome..

you can get your vet to recommend one to you
take your bully there..
there is nothing like a good opthomologist..
and the cost of them is not that expensive really either..
I was impressed with the one for Otis here in Canada..
YOU WILL NEED a recommendation from your vet..a referal to see one for sure though

regardless, a vet with a lot of experience with the breed is hel

agree on seeing an opthamologist happy.gif

Im sorry but

the Bulldog specialist term gets way overused here. In most instances it is fine but in all reality and eye is an eye and entrpion is entropion whether it is on a bulldog or a shar pei. if the problem is with the eye an opthamologist is your best bet.

Amy Matt Jasmine and Porkchop's picture

No offence taken!

I need to hear this....I want to do the right thing for Pork! I will talk to my hubby, we do know another bully vet in St. Louis that we have taken Jazzy to before. I may get a second opinion.

How is Polly's leg doing?

Amy's Sig Pic

Amy

I would use the ointment for a few days and see what happens. If anything see an opthamologist if it does not get better. It is just kind of weird that it is only in one eye. He may have a small infection or conjunctivitis that is causing it to swell. If that is the case the ointment should help. If you hold his eye open with your finger is the membrane around his actual cornea swollen?

That's great you like him but...

that doesn't necessarily mean he is a specialist in terms of bulldogs.
Losing weight is not going to affect entropion. That is the silliest thing I have heard no offense.

He said that some of the weight

he gained, he gained in his face. That his wrinkles are almost swollen for lack of a better word right now.
We ran around the house last night and he loved it!

Hope you are having fun!!

YOU can vary the kind of frozen green beans that you use too...

I sometimes for the heck of it use the string frozen beans..
mostly just the frozen regular green beans..
when I see them go on sale..I STOCK Up..it does not take long to go through a bag of beans..
goodluck

you can use other frozen veggies too if you want to give him a change..
MY DOGS all love frozen green beans..
even the bullies who do not need to be on diet..

RosieBeGood's picture

Aww poor baby!

Rosie had to loose a lot of weight at one point she weighed 71 lbs and she is now down to 54 lbs happy.gif and boy was it ever worth it!

My old vet recommended a diet medicine called Slentrol so we tried it. You can google it to find out more info. Basically it helps you learn when the dog is full and how much food the dog actually needs. Well we learned that we were over feeding Rosie a lot. So by cutting back her food to the dose the medicine showed she needed and exercise she is now down to 54 lbs and feels great! it took a good 2 years to get all the weight off but you dnt want to have them loose it super fast either!

She is still on the same amount of food twice a day but i will add in green beans as fillers for her and she dont get much people food or table scraps just special occasions happy.gif

Porky loves them!

I will def try this tonight! Thanks so much! I cannot wait to post a pic of the newly thin Porky!
And to help him out Mommy is going on a diet too. (though not the same one!!LOL)

Amy's Sig Pic

Yes, I use frozen....no salt like the cans...

my dogs love all veggies so I am sure PC will love them too!

[linked image]

Amy Matt Jasmine and Porkchop's picture

Thanks!

do you feed them to them frozen?

Amy's Sig Pic

Jacinda and the bullies's picture

I'm just not sure losing weight will help his eye

It sounds as if he does need to lose weight though. I would try to cut his food back and give him green beans as a replacement. If he will play fetc, that's a good way to get some exercise indoors. Trace and I are playing fetch right now.

Amy Matt Jasmine and Porkchop's picture

Frozen green beans right?

The canned ones have too much salt....am I remembering correctly?

Amy's Sig Pic

it works too....I use it on the pugs here all the time now too..

just cut back on the regular kibble and supplement with the green beans..
they really need to be frozen type of green beans..
do not need to cook them or anything
my chubby pugs are doing great on this diet
and love it too

Re: Cash had "puppy entropian"

I am going to be really strict and do anything to avoid him having to go through surgery! Wish us luck!

Thanks for the info!

Amy's Sig Pic

Amy Matt Jasmine and Porkchop's picture

Thanks

I was wondering what the green bean diet was!

Amy's Sig Pic

Cash had "puppy entropian"

but it had nothing to do with his weight, my vet said he would outgrow it - and he has for the most part. A little more growing to do and he should be perfect happy.gif

The opthalmologist we saw said that with young dogs who show mild entropian she doesnt do surgery, just tacks if they NEED it and re-evaluates when the dog is full grown (18-24 months)

[linked image]

I never heard that either until the other day....

I was telling a friend about Cain's "all of a sudden" tear stains on his face and she said "oh, he gained that much weight that now he has entropian?". And she is not exactly a person that does not KNOW bulldogs!

Cain's weight is the exact opposite! He has lost 4 lbs due to his energy level and constant need to play so he is thinner then when I first got him.

Suggestion: green beans to supplement kibble....seems to be a popular one. Reduce the amount of kibble you give him and supplement with green beans.

Re: That's the first time I have ever heard that.

He weighs 69lbs. He is overweight. I have not been able to get them out like I have been before it got so cold and over Christmas.
