my sister's house yesterday to walk with her dog since even though he doesn't like other dogs, for some reason he WILL walk better with one (go figure). At first he would not budge...poor Jack (my sister's very friendly, very passive pit/hound mix, kept looking at him like he was nuts) then, as usual, I took him off leash and he followed along like a perfectly trained boy. He hwas always walked better off leash. Stays right with me, just likes to stop to rest..lol. WHen he goes for his laser throat surgery next month I want to get xrays on his hips to be sure his reluctance isn't due to pain since he limps now and then, but I really think it's just due to lack of use...gotta get this boy moving more.
Well, that makes sense with his resource guarding issues...
ANYTHING becomes valuable to him if another dog has it. The final time we tried to have him and my sister's dog together indoors (indoors is always an issue) we picked up all toys, bones, everything we could think of that could be an issue)...Hooch actually did a play bow to Jack, shocking...all was fine...and then Jack picked up a SLIPPER...and Hooch jumped him for it. Hooch has no interest in slippers...but Jack had it, so it became valuable.
LYNN...how true this statement is...
the same here..
if one of them has a toy..the other one wants it too.
I had an old ball here that was not used for years...and then one day Bella took an interest in it..same material as her jolly ball I guess and the next thing..all the dogs wanted it. it now gets good use..lol. so agree on competition idea..
I can also see a rescue putting up tons of fuss though and paranoid. Max did it too when he first came here..he slowly grew out of most of his insecurities.. Rescue dogs come with their own issues..and takes time to get some of them out of the way...and work on them.
I think it's competition
If I give one of my dogs a treat that they don't particularly like, if you of the other dogs likes it, the first dog will then eat the treat I gave to them. Most of the toys around here mean nothing unless or until one of the dogs decides to chew/play with it. Then it becomes the most interesting toy in the world. Our 2 males are like Hooch, when we "walk" them, they are far more motivated when they are together, maybe they believe that they are missing out on something. So, they stay with us and stay together.
Sometimes, I wish they could talk
Lynn King CPDT
that could be from ...............
fighting for the food dish and things like that..
if he came from a bad home..and was an outside dog
he might have had to fight to get his food and now he has serious guarding issues..
also rescue dog are very very protective over their owners..
I see that with Max here too
nobody had better come close to me if they were to show any time of aggression..he might go at them too..
he is very protective or me..
the rescue dogs has a very deep sense of belonging in their new homes
and the bond is unlike any dog out there..they are bond..fast to a good home
well takes time..lol...more treat..more walk...more treat..more
that is how it was with Max
took along time for him to be comfortable on a walk
he was fine without the harness or the leash .he walked great
he was good with another dog..
in the beginning took him with Bella all the time..
but now he is the first one out the door..
he is great now..
but treat walk treat walk treat walk...a zillion times..lol
hang in ..your bully will get it..
switch the treat to something really yummy
It's possible....we just don't know. wish he could talk!
nm
That's how we walk! Treat, walk 10 feet, treat, repeat. lol
nm
We think he was, but not in a positve way, he has serious
resource guarding issues with other dogs and while he won't "start" a fight if another dog shows aggression he is quick to fight. We don't sit in the waiting room at the vet for this reason. Too much tension there.
maybe he spent some time tied up
I'm sure that dogs who are tied and have gone to the end of their rope over and over must get a mental issue about being afraid of moving while attached to a rope. Poor guy!

Cathy
when she first came home
in his old home...........
he was likely with other dogs..
might see security in the fact of them walking..with him
back to the pack idea..
just a thought
but sure sounds like Max..
Max was afraid of his shadow when he came here..
HMMMM sounds like Max...try this.............
Max is a rescue pug..but when I got him...he totally balked at that harness and leash. he was scared out of his mind but ...........
he walked great with Bella
the vet told me that he had a fear of being returned to where he was from..that was the best thing the vet could think of and used Bella as a security blanket. dogs are pack animals so that might be what is happening with your dog..he is using the other dog as security for him.
what you can do.............
is......
take a HUGE amount of treats in your pockets
and start from the beginning..again
make sure the treats are not the same as you give him in the house
gotta be better..
start off with the leash and harness on him in the house..and treat him
take him out for short walks and treat him all the time..
same treats
and then..............you will be able to give up the treats in time..
but with a rescue..they are scared..some of them have been tied up..which was the case with Max here.. he is great now..but he did the same..was ok off leash but crappy on leash.
NOW he is great both ways..but that is a long time later
the biggest thing is the treat is not the same as in the house..only use it for walks
and the more the better in the beginning.
Lynn, what do you make of him walking better with dogs
even though he has zero interest in interacting with them? He is such a quirky boy!
hi, lynn, no...he had a growth removed in July and they couldn't
need to go back in with a laser this time. His palate is good. I know nothing is 100% but he freezes when spooked, shuts down, has never run in the 2 years we've had him. And thankfully, few things spook him now...remember when everything would scare him, from lawn ornaments to parked cars to the bulldog statues in my dining room?
No, he is a rescue...spent most of his time in a crate from
what we know...in a yard...very neglected, most likely some abuse from his behaviour. He was totally shut down when we got him.
Thanks, we do go camping....he just sits on his cot...
no desire to walk around there either! Want to take him to beach again this year.
Is he having palette surgery?
If so, that may be one of the reasons that he is reluctant to walk on a leash, might bother his throat.
Instead of taking the leash completely off, I would use a really thin long line (20/30 feet of something like thin cord) and drop it, let him drag it. Unless you have really good recall with him, I would be afraid that something would spook/excite him and without any kind of leash attached, you won't have any control of him.
Hugs to the man

something about the leash he does not like...have you....
had him since he was a puppy??
My bullies walk better with company. always I better walk if I take the 2 of them together here too. no idea why.
Bella is great off leash...athough she is only off leash in the backyard or in the park behind the house.
Gus can not be off leash since he is deaf
Take him camping, or to a remote spot
Where he can motor around, on his own, at will and without pavement or restraint.
Then you'll have a better idea of activity that he resists.
Every dog I've ever had out in the great outdoors, LOVES that freedom!
If he has limitations due to medical issues, I hope it's something that can be resolved quickly and easily for him.
