I need to vent

So here I am among friends to let you know that I am VERY upset. I got a call last week from a guy who wanted to bring his Bulldog to rescue. When I asked if the dog was up to date on his shots the guy said no, but he would take care of that. Today the guy calls and wants to bring the dog within the hour. (Nothing like giving a person some notice about these things!) I said OK. I am appalled at the condition this dog is in. He looks like he had been in a shelter for a period of time. He needed a bath really badly. (That has been done!) He has hot spots all over his body. No medication for them. Only meds for dry eye in his left eye. And the worst part of all....this dog is completely out of control. He does not listen at all. And I must be the sexiest thing this dog has ever seen because every time he gets in the same room with me he is trying to hump me. I am exhausted from trying to teach him the meaning of the word NO!!
I know that deep down inside Gunner is a good dog. He is 3 1/2 years old, and after some cleaning up, and hot spot meds, he will be a good looking guy. I will take him to the vet and get him neutered, and put him into obedience school, and he will be all ready for a good forever home.
Thanks for listening!! I feel better already.
Jane

I have a couple of relatives (in-laws) just like that ......

Get a puppy and everything is fine as long as the puppy is no trouble (like having nutritional needs that Ol' Roy can't meet, or requiring medical attention, or needing to go potty in the middle of the night, or simply growing up). Then the dog becomes a problem and is booted out of the house .. eventually starts wandering .. and then gets hit by a car or disappears altogether. We've watched this cycle over and over through the years.

When my husband came back from visiting his family shortly after Christmas, he brought photos of this relative with the newest puppy. I told him I didn't want to see pics of the cute new puppies anymore because I know how it's going to work out.

I just dont understand some people...

but that is why we have people like you. Thank you for taking care of gunner.

Re: I need to vent

Jane,'
Your work and patience is incredible! If anyone can turn a dog around it is you. Thanks very much!

NO THANK YOU

You can vent anytime you feel the need. It's a shame the shape of some of the dogs you get in and I know it would anger me to think what the dogs have been put though with uncaring owners.

Poor Gunner, He is in good hands now

Jane, I am curious to who pays for all of the treatment. Is this by donations or you yourself. I don't quite understand how the whole rescue thing works. YOu heal him, make him better and then find a good home. HOw are is that.

Shame on that owner

This really burns my a*$ to no end. People get pups/dogs then don't bother to train or care for them properly. When they become too hard to manage or take care of they just go and give them up, never considering what their neglect has done to these animals.

In your care, I'm sure you will help him and train him properly and he will become a wonderful family pet.

You do what you do because....

...you dearly love them.. I will never understand why people get dogs.. they expect the dog to love THEM.. they don't bother worrying about loving the dog!!

Perfect case in point.. A couple of weeks ago our new neighbor.. (..thank God he's 5 acres away and not closer to us..) ..was reported to the local humane society for his two pit-bulls antagonizing our neighbor's cat. I also reported him for his two dogs coming into our fenced yard through 50 yards of blackberry bushes and harrassing Maggie and Sophie Anne. ..let alone that they bark all night long..

When the guy from the Humane Society came out to talk with the owner the owner had the audacity to tell him, "Oh, I just have them there to protect the property. I don't live there yet. But I come by and feed them every other day."

Of our complaints we were told the Humane Society couldn't do anything unless the dogs aggressively attached someone. No laws had been broken!! Go figure!! People like that shouldn't be allowed to own dogs!!

Oh Jane

Bless your heart for taking care of that wild boy lol!
Vent whenever you want - doesn't it just feel so darn good!!!

I don't know how you do it.

I don't know how you and others in rescue manage the tasks you undertake. It's all I can do to keep up with the two I have and they're pretty well behaved. Not well-mannered but well behaved The lengths you have to go to make a bullie adoptable would overwhelm me and then when I got them doing good, I wouldn't be able to get rid of them, even if I knew they were going to a good home. You have my deepest respect. One of the messages said to give the bullie a kiss --- don't do that if he's finding you so sexy LOL.

Betty, Buddy and Mighty Dog

I think we need a "Blacklist"....

I think all the rescue groups need to share names of people who have TURNED a dog into rescue, we anyone would know if they are ever looking to buy another one again. If they couldn't take care of one, they should never have the opportunity to get another.

its so hard

for me to understand people. My dogs are my life - the biggest joy in my life. How can someone be so "bothered" by a dog that they need to dump it within the hour?!! I can just sit up all night thinking about stories like this that I hear bewildered.....

Give that bully a kiss for me.

Kris

I dont know why people get dogs

or any animal if they are not going to care for them properly. Hope all works out with him.

Oh my......why people do that I dont understand..but

You have him now...and he is on his way to being a Great Bullie Boy.....

Go Go Bulldog Mommy!!...he's there because you were to have him.

Your love for bullies and contempt for neglectful
morons is understood and supported.
Though we can't be with you to help, be encouraged to know that you and yours will be in our prayers as well
as that rambunctious "gem in the rough".

Best wishes,
gregg & arthur

You are so great!

Jane, I could treat the dog all day, but I would never know where to begin with the behavioral stuff. I just don't have the insight for it, I don't think. ( I want to talk to the dog and explain everything. It doesn't work!) I think it is so great that you can tackle these issues. I am sure it does wear you out, though. Thanks goodness there are people like you. I hope you get some rest tonite, and are refreshed tomorrow.

Gunner

If anyone can bring Gunner around its you Jane!!
