I have a question about flea/tick repellant and vaccinations...long

I have to take Lola and Chuckie in for their vaccinations soon, my Lola has not had any vaccinations since she got her baby shots, last one was the Rabies shot and the vet gave it too early at 4 months. She has had various health issues, including the immune mediated thrombocytopenia, the vet that we have now has kept postponing them because he knows that her immune system is not up to par. I am becoming more and more convinced that, I really don't want to have them immunized any more, I know that we have to do the Rabies and the Heartworm, does anyone else take a conservative approach to vaccines and how did you approach your vet about it, also I always feel guilty that I don't ever use the flea & tick repellants, thank goodness I've never seen a flea or tick, I wouldn't know what to do with a tick, are they real necessary? am I putting my babies at risk by not using the flea/tick repellants? I need to prepare for when I tell my vet that we don't want any extras, want to sound like I've done my research, any suggestions would be great, thanks for reading I know it's kinda long, I tend to ramble, but I do appreciate everyones opinions.

Thank you, one clove it is!

thanks:)

I just do a clove a day...

We do it at breakfast. Just squeeze the press over the food so all the garlic oils/juice goes in too.

Yeah!! Salmon pills or oil were not a big hit in my house...

so just press one or two cloves on top of their kibble? I'm definitely going to get a garlic press this weekend.

You can, there's nothing wrong with it, but it's not potent enou

So I'd hate for you to rely on that and then wonder what the heck we are doing giving garlic as a bug repellent. It really does have to be fresh chopped, right outta the bulb. It's whatever is released when you chop it that actually provides the best protection.

I'm SOOOO huge on always posting sources, and it kills me that I can't find the old article I read years ago that emphasized this. If I ever come across it again, I'll be sure to post it.

Oh yeah... we started using it when he ate kibble!

He gobbles it up. But then, he likes to chew his salmon oil pill like a treat, so maybe he's odd...

Thanks Julia, I didn't know that, I'm going to get one this week

I always cook their garlic whether it's in their cookies or their wet food, does Grovie eat it willingly, garlic is pretty strong, I'm going to have to get them used to it, I know Grovie eats raw, was the garlic easy to introduce to him?

can you use jarred garlic?

We always buy a huge jar of pre-chopped garlic. Can I just put some on their food from that? How much? A spoon full or just a tiny amount?

Garlic as a bug repellent only works FRESH...

It's the oils that are released when you press it or chop it that make it active. No powder, or even jarred chopped garlic has the same potency.

I don't know what I'd do without my garlic press... it's a god send. LOL!!!

Exactly, for allergies!!

she was about a year old at the time, she is now 2 years old, but she acts and looks like a 5 year old, in spite of the probiotics and I use an immune booster called Evsco select.

no, not worried about the smell at all...........

I just thought it would be easier if I could buy it in pill form lol

do you have a garlic press?

Pampered Chef sells a real good one that you don't even have to peel the skin, just put in and press through... do you not want to smell like garlic (on hands?) if so run water and rub your hands on your kitchen sink (stainless steel) it takes off the smell of garlic..seriously it works!

Or are you concerned that your bully will give you garlicy kisses? I don't think that it effects their breath that bad..it is just that the fleas don't like it.

Evelyn...what was the prednisone for?

I really hate that drug...it causes all sorts of trouble...was it for itchy skin due to allegies?

I have a question.........

is there a pill or something other then the grated garlic for fleas?

here, the first rabbie shot lasts a year, 2nd rabbie lasts 3 yea

so what you are saying is that all Rabies shots last 3 years...

I was under the impression that there was a particular Rabies shot that lasted for 3 years, thanks so much for all the info, my Lola got really ill with something called immune mediated thrombocytopenia, our vet is convinced that it was just a coincidence, but I'm not entirely sure that is wasn't brought on by the heart worm medication that my previous vet prescribed, it wasn't Heartguard, it was some generic form, at any rate about a week after I started her on the med, in conjunction with the antibiotic and the prednisone that she was on at the time, she got so ill that she was in the hospital for 5 days, so that is another issue for me, I think I need a holistic vet, I already give probiotics and I use plenty of garlic in the food I cook for them and in the cookies I bake for them, I'd be really interested to hear what your vet thinks about the heartworm stuff, I'm convinced it's all poison and I hate the thought of putting it into my babies, I'm really torn about this, thanks for the info.

no need for repellants

Unless you walk your dogs in tall grassy areas...or in the woods (or if your area has known tick problems) you do not need them.... as for fleas...if you dog gets fleas you can get rid of them by simple flee washes (or there are more gentle natural remedies to get rid of fleas)...you can also feed your dog some fresh grated garlic mixed into the food to give them a garlic smell (that fleas seem to repel from...not to mention garlic is good for dogs)

Do not give your dogs another rabies vaccinne (especially the one that was given it already at 4 months...) Rabies should be given once every 3 years (as there is proof that the vaccinne stays in the system for that long)...most vets are coming around to the knowledge that they don't have to vaccinate for rabies every year..if your vet does not agree with you find another one (younger doctors are more open to newer information)

Heart worm....this one is tough as you don't want your dog exposed to this...I am going to be seeing my holistic vet this weekend and I am going to ask her opionion on the heart worm pill (my other past 2 dogs always had it (but then both of my other dogs got cancer)...so I want to eliminate any unneccessary meds... i will post what she tells me to do on Monday regarding the heartworm,..she is a medical vet and a holistic vet.

To boost your dog's immune system you can by probiotics for him... they are sold at health food stores (for people) and are refridgerated..and keep refridgerated... it is a live bacteria (good bacteria that we all should have in our intestines) this gets rid of the bad bacteria that can weaken the immune system and cause all sorts of health issues.

You can e-mail me too if you need other ways to increase the immune system... Dr. Pitcairns book Natural Health for Cats and Dogs is an excellent book to read.
