Hi everyone.
So, George has not been behaving lately. More specifically, he's chewing everything when we leave. He has been out of his crate for probably almost a year now and we've never had a problem until these past 2 weeks. We make sure to close all the doors upstairs so all he has to roam is the living room, dining room and kitchen. Most times we are pretty sure he never leaves the couch. In the last two weeks he's chewed my reading glasses (I'm still not sure how he got them because they were on top of the coffee table) two throw pillows on the couch and now today we came home to find he chewed the COUCH CUSHION!!!!
He has plenty of toys, his food and water and his bed when we leave, and nothing "new" has changed ( I know that bullies don't do well with change sometimes.) He isn't staying home any longer than before and frankly, he's not home alone for more than 4 or 5 hours! I really don't want to crate him but I am thinking about restricting his area because lord knows, I can't afford a new couch!
I would really like to know what you all think could be getting into him! I'd like to correct the problem instead of putting a band aid on it...but the problem is, I'm not sure what is causing this!
Thanks so much!
I loved that picture of George in the sweater. I showed it to ev
house over the holidays.
my chewer cant chew thru...
the med.sized Nylabone, it has a mint green center with "knobbies" on the ends..The Jolly teaser, so far hasn't been chewed up..He trys tho...and he is THE Master chewer of the house....
much bully love~Christine, Dupree, Marley and Savannah
LOL!
The sweater cracks me! We actually bought him a hat, but it had fur on it and he thought it was a toy and wouldn't keep it on! So we went to the a local consignment shop and found a little boy sweater! We were in tears laughing as we took the pics cause he looked so cute!
Any suggestions on which toys worked best? I've heard about these toys but I'm open to personal favorites!!!
Okay here is what you do.....
put him in that christmas sweater and send him to my house for a couple of weeks. I will send himm back to you with the perfect toys that will keep him from chewing the "good stuff." He will need a regular walk, and super duper rubber toys that can be filled with cookies which which require hin to be creative as to how to remove those cookies for a snacker. worked for my Josie Louise who by the way, ate the lights off the Christmas tree. Yea, well, they don't call it the "terrible 2's for nothin" LOL
No reason he can't be happy in an xpen area. I use two sets and make a nice little area in my kitchen nook for rescue dogs. I have a large crate with the door open and a dog bed and water/feeding area. They are all pretty happy in that set up.

I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.
Here is Bart all comfy and cozy~
You don't want to come home to find a dog that choked on stuffing or wood chunks.

something simple you can try is......
leave the bully out and go out for only 15 minutes or so and see what the bully does
that way you get the idea if it is more behavioural..
a longer time could be more boredom
I would just test the bully and go out for coffee and come back and see if anything happened..
He's almost 2
and we've never had a problem before! It's just so recent!
Thank you for reminding me its for his protection too. I know it is, but I'm a sap for those eyes and I feel bad.lol
how old is he?
boredom would be my guess. How about xpen fencing off an area for him that includes his crate or bed and some toys? That would confine him, but it would not be as crowded as a crate.

Remember it's for his safety too! Don't feel guilty. You are protecting him.

Definitely bored....
he needs something new to stimulate him

make sure he has a few "chew toy" items like Nylabones and praise him when he chews on these

I would try going for a walk...exercising is some way before
you go out, if you aren't doing that, to tire him out, before you go. Sounds like he has some energy he needs to get rid of perhaps?
he sounds like he is doing it for attention...but.........
that is just my guess.
he gets a reaction out of you and he will continue to do it..
the best thing is to ignore him when he does it.
the other thing maybe he needs a good walk before you leave to wear off some of the engery and a safe chewing bone. something that can be just his..
for some reason he is looking for attention.
and for bulldogs they will do what they need to do..to get it.
sorry not much help
a crate is sounding like your best choice for now and that protects him too from chewing something he is not supposed to and hurt himself.
