hydrocephalus

Its been awhile since ive posted anything.....Im the bully mom that purchased the brother and sister act.
I went to pick out my puppy from a litter of 9. I noticed a very tiny puppy that was separated from the rest of the litter in his own little basket. When the time came to go pick my puppy up, that same puppy was sitting by himself separated from his siblings so I asked her what was wrong with him. He was obviously much smaller than the rest. She said her vet said he had hydrocephalus and she was just going to find someone that just wanted him as a pet. I jumped at the chance ( not having a clue what hydrocephalus was)Well......when I took them both to my vet and found out what this condition is....I was heartbroken. My vet said he probably wouldnt live long. I decided he would get as much love and attention as he could stand for the time he was here.
A friend of mine from work came by one night to see him and in the 30 minutes she was there, she prayed for him 4 times. On feb. 4th, they will both(ellie mae & max) celebrate their 1st birthday!!! Here is my question. He has nor has he ever had a sympton of hydrocephalus....except for a domed shaped head when he was younger. Since he has made it a year....could the vets have been wrong? Can I breath now and assume he will have a normal bulldog life? Any feedback is welcomed.
Can you tell which one is my special boy?

my concern and question would be

if the pup was separated from the mom and siblings during the first weeks of his life and for how long

physically I cannot comment however from reading I also want to congratulate for rescuing him and giving him a chance. happy.gif

You bet he could! (Link to an incredible story below)

I have a friend who had a tiny pup with cleft palate & lip, as well as hydrocephalus--much worse than your boy! She is a vet tech and she dutifully tube fed him for 8 weeks (several weeks after the vet told her he wouldn't live through the night happy.gif I talked to her the other day and he is still going strong--over five years later! happy.gif Here's the link to his story...

nothing

No pain, no sensitivity....he was born blind in his left eye though. I wish you all could be around him for a day....he is so special. But they are all special!

I'd only be negative if

he seems to be in pain, sensitive or losing vision.

Arrested hydrocephalus

I have it! Without knowing bulldog anatomy, if the hydrocephalus does not get worse in a certain timeframe, it may not cause any further issues and can live normally. This is not the norm, as hydrocephalus is indicative of other congenital problems and it usually gets bad soon after birth without a shunt, intervention and even then usually the other problems are worse. In short, sounds like you have a healthy dog!

perfect

thats exactly what i want to hear....but i also want to hear if anyone has a negative thought also...
that pic is about 4 months old....he is a big brute of a handsome boy now!

Congrats, first of all, on having your pup survive past a few we

Very often the pup with hydrocephalis also has internal abnormalities, undevelopment of lungs, etc. that causes a very short life, but if you little guy has made it to one year I think its safe to say that any problems he had were either resolved with maturity or are compensated by other factors, and I include the water on the brain=hydrocephalis. happy.gif
