How do you handle overheating?

I drove Bubba through the desert this weekend and he was so hot that I couldn't get him cooled down. Any advice? I think someone mentioned awhile back they had an ice vest for their bully. Do you know where to get one and does it work? I am considering moving back to Florida but am worried about the heat.

Google IMAGE searches can have interesting results.

Our ways to cope with Georgia heat / humidity...

A quick list of what works for us.

A/C nearly year-round in the house and car.

Early morning and / or late evening walks on hot days.

Throw a wet hand towel in the freezer for a few minutes and then draped over your bully. Bob LOVES this when he's hot. Just stands perfectly still, basking in the coolness. Also, an occasional cold shower is okay if you dry them immediately.

Short intervals of high heat.

For long outdoor occasions (i.e. football tailgaiting), having A/C on demand is invaluable. If Bob gets too hot, we jump in the car for 15 minutes and crank the A/C.

For the unavoidable hot day-time activity, a large water bottle with more ice than water. The best advice I ever got about over-heating was to give Bob ice cubes when he was a puppy.
He loved them when he was teething and now thinks of them as a treat. Perfect and simple way to cool 'em down quick when they're hot.

There are many ways to deal with heat. It shouldn't be a factor in your move decision, you'll just have to be more prepared. The UGA bulldog, UGA V (or whatever they are on now), has an A/C doghouse on the field and a bag of ice to lay on. He is outside in the 85+ heat (70%+ humidity) for 2+ hours and does fine. Of course that is a bit extravagant.

Best of luck,

Glen, Jen, and bully, Bob.

same here...

we live in Miami and Leeloo is safe from the heat. She's in the A/C all day and when we go outside to play, potty, etc... it's either at short intervals of time or when the sun isn't too hot (early morning, late afternoon)... no problems here.

Where in Florida are you considering moving to?
