Hang a bell from the door knob that he will go out through, ring it each time you take him out. Don't let him come inside until he pees. He will soon begin to ring the bell when he has to go out. (Yes, sometimes they'll ring it for spite.) LOL
If work schedules everyone away for over 4-8 hrs, crating with a release at mid-day should work well.
In my experience males seem easier to housebreak then females. As puppies just restrict their area and playtime until they learn the urge to go outside. Then give them more space and time out to play. At nite I don't give Monty anything to drink after 6/7pm and usually take him out once during the nite. With marking it could or could not happen. We generally fix our males which seems to help with that problem.
There is nothing different in housetraining a male or a female. Marking is behavior, not a necessary bodily function. Not all males mark territory and I have known several females that do. My Gladys is one of them, she is worse then my 3 male dogs.

Crate seems to be the best way for us.

Good luck and have fun with that puppy
