I took Zap to get his hernia stitches out today and everything looked fine. A vet tech took them out and said we could go but I asked her if Dr. Pete could listen to his lungs while we were there because I had noticed a little rumbling in his throat.
Long story short, no temperature but his soft palate is HUGE. Dr. Pete said it was infected and had swollen. He put him on antibiotics, I take him back Monday to see if the inflammation has gone down and the surgery will be ASAP. Dr. Pete said it was so inflamed that he doesn't want him being active or over heating at all. He also said it could be somewhat enlarged just from the excitement of being there but the surgery needs to be done regardless.
I'm a nervous wreck as you can imagine but I trust that God will guide Dr. Pete's hand during the surgery !
Thanks,
Dave
oh, sweet little Zapper!!! Meaty and I are sending prayers and (

Good thoughts for Zapper....
from us....

Always in my heart...
Dave..............
Chunk had palate reduction surgery a couple of years ago and he came out just fine, except for the soreness for a few days. But, there was a huge difference in his breathing. He doesn't snore as much or as loud. He "decompresses" (catches his breath) faster after playing roughly and he's able to "inhale" his food (10 seconds or less to eat 8 full ounces of meat)more easily. I still watch him when he eats because his airway is narrow too. I'm sure Zapman will be good to go in no time. And I believe God is the original vet and Dr. Pete was made in His image, so I have every confidence things will go well. He sounds like a wonderful vet to have! You're all in our prayers! Out.

Yes, please take time to work on the infection/inflammation
before moving ahead to surgery, because that can induce some swelling also, and it is difficult to correctly evaluate how much to cut away when there is swelling! Too little is as wrong as too much. Keep him quiet and give meds a chance to work.

BE MY VALENTINE
Zapper has always had a rumble but I'm thinking this is from the
When I first got Zap 3+ years ago another vet looked at him and said his soft palate was really elongated but didn't think it was a big risk at the time so this was something I knew would have to be fixed sooner or later.

We'll say lots of prayers for Zapper
Poor guy. I'm sure everything will go well and he will be good as new!
Elaine, he said he did see it during the other surgery but
wasn't alarmed about it at he time because it was no where near this inflamed. Dr. Pete said he doesn't wanna put him under this quick either so this is going to be a balancing act with the timing.

I didn't think of that, but you are right
Dave, have you noticed Zapper breathing raspy/rumbling in the past? I knew within the first year that Sid had an elongated palate because of his breathing issues. If Zap has not had any previous symptons then maybe this is more of an infected palate from his past surgery rather than elongated. The vet may still recommend surgery, but it could also just be a temporary thing since he was put under recently to have his bait n tackle....erm, tackled
I'm sure you will know more on Monday, butyes, just don't let him get over excited for the time being.
Praying for Zapper.
Hope all goes well.
wonder how they didn't see that during his other surgery?
hope it's just excitement or possibly irritation/infection resulting from intubation during his hernia surgery. I wouldn't want to put him under again this soon.
