Hives...... :(
Submitted by admin on April 20, 2010 - 5:26pmHi all, we're an hour and a half from home at my in-laws. Arthur has been playing outin the large back yard
today rolling around in the grass and romping.
Around 10:30pm, we noticed some small hives on his back. The last time he had hives, it was from a bee sting, and he swelled up like a Shar-pei.
I cannot find any evidence of a sting. All I had was Max. Strength Benedryl, and it has acetaminephen in it.
I gave him 1/2 caplet.
Cats don't do well with acetaminephen, will this harm Arthur?
I'm going out in search of an all night pharmacy around
1 am if hives not better. I'm only going to give him
straight Benedryl from now on.

Going on 4 hrs sleep, been moving rock all day.

My vet says that aceteminephen or however you spell it won't hurt them unless they go out drinking. He gave Oscar Tylenol with codeine when he had tendonitis and he was fine on it. It's not something you'd give on a regular basis, but I'm sure one won't hurt. if you can find regular benedryl at an all night pharmacy - just in case his hives get worse.

I'm more concerned about the acetamenephen.
The caplet 1/2 had approx 250 mgs.

Yes, regular benedryl caplets will work better. Oscar weighs 74 pounds and gets two 25 mg caplets am and pm when he has hives. A nice cool bath will help stop the itching.
