Here is my experience with the dog bite

My son was playing with a boxer, they grew up together, dog was friendly would never hurt him. They both went for the same toy and he had underbite and his lower canines stuck out so they actually bumped heads. His canine went into Lukes cheek. It did not go all the way thru but left a hole or a puncture wound. We went to the Dr. and the Dr did NOT stitch it up because if it does get infected it needs to drain. THANK GOD! He almost did though because usually dog bites do not get infected as easy as other animal bites. So all was fine, they did take George (boxer) in because his rabies shot was expired by a week. The next morning Luke's face was swollen on that one side. It was red and hot. I took him to my neighbors(fireman and nurse) and he said get to the hospital immediately. We went to hospital ER. They immediatly admitted him and the resident DR went and got the Doc in charge. That DR flipped out. IMMEDIATELY GET THAT WOUND OPEN AND SQUEEZE IT AND GET THE DRAINAGE OUT! I WANT HIM ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL RIGHT AWAY AND I WANT HIM ON AN IV STAT! I'm totally freaking out! I guess the infection can take over that fast and if the first doc would have closed it the ER doc said the results would have been horrific. He was in the hospital for THREE days after that with 24 hour IV antibiotic. Kristin!! If it is swollen, and its red,and warm go to the DR!!!!! Dont mess with it!!!!!

This was about a yr and half ago I think and he just has a littl

But we are still paying the hospital bill!! And now he is totally cool with shots or anything since he had to do that whole IV thing. The nurses were great!! And everyone was so nice so it was actually a pleasant experience. THANKS!!

Cat bites and scratches can be very bad and get infected easily

I am so glad that your son will be OK b/c the first doctor thought twice! That is soooo scary though...your poor baby boy!

I agree

I have seen many serious injuries due to dog bites with letter carriers, having worked at the Postal Service 27 years. Sometimes what seems like a pretty minor bite can end up being very serious.

The most important thing is to watch for any red streaks spreading out from the bite.

As far as saying the dog is up to date on shots, that only concerns rabies. You certainly have no concern about contacting Parvo, kennel cough, etc...lol. But it is the bacteria that gets into the bite. And yes, they ALWAYS say to leave it open to drain.

p.s. Until you can get the emergency room...

go the drugstore and get some saline solution, and spray it on the wound, and then put some NEOSPORIN on it, and then cover it with a breathable bandage.

If you're concerned about scarring, insist to see a plastic surgeon. From my personal experience last year, the hand surgeon/plastic surgeon was the most knowledgable in helping me to feel better physically after the dog bite. I was in a lot of pain, and her treatment was instrumental in helping me.

I am grateful to the hospital where I was admitted to receive the IV ANTIBIOTICS, but I am even more grateful to the PLASTIC SURGEON/HAND SURGEON. She was the most knowledgable person when it came to treating dog bites.

p.s. Kristen...

if you're worried about the doctor reporting it to ANIMAL CONTROL, you can tell them you don't know the name of the dog, but tell them the dog is up to date on the Rabies vaccine.

Kristen, PLEASE get medical attention!!!!!!!! When my hand was infected, it was also very swollen, and it was painful.

You can get medical attention, and also know that you don't have to tell them the identity of the dog. Please don't worry about the dog in that respect, okay. The ball is in your court, and it's possible to get medical treatment, and also to protect the dog too.

I hope you feel better soon.

I totally agree, I was bitten by a dog last year and it got infe

and my hand got terribly infected. I was admitted to the hospital, and could have lost my hand because the infection spread so quickly. Please get to the hospital immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IV antibiotics are able to help with the infection.

Many of you will remember that I was viciously attacked in a pet supply store, by the store owner's dog. He had an extensive history of biting the customers, and I happened to be his victim on that particular evening.

My intention is NOT to scare you. I never realized how dangerous an infection can be, until last spring when I came so terribly close to losing my hand.

Please take care.
