Hercules update

Thank you all for your kind words and good thoughts. I just spoke with the surgeon and he said that the procedure went well, although it took a long time to cut away all of the diseased tissue. They also checked out his soft palate and said it still looks good, so good news there too. He is being transferred to the critical care unit for the night so that he'll have more monitoring than the regular overnight hospital.

Here's a picture of Hercules for you all:

Thanks, everyone...

My dh talked to the nurse last night and she said they were keeping him quiet and he was sleeping well. Rounds are this morning, so I'm looking forward to getting another update later this morning.

Ear Canal Ablation

Hi Pat,

Yes - he'll be deaf in that ear now. The dermatologist said that it's unlikely that he heard much out of the ear before the procedure because the canal was so closed up. When I trained him as a puppy, I used hand signals and voice commands, so we'll just have to focus more on the hand signals now.

Are you the one who has the deaf bully? Someone had posted links to several websites a while back that I will be checking out. I want to reinforce the hand signals so that if we have to do the second ear, the transition won't be so tough.

Glad to hear

I'm really glad to hear from someone else who has had it done with a good result. The doctor told us that he has never had anyone regret doing the procedure, and that many people wished they had done it sooner. Definitely after talking to the surgeon about the extent of the diseased tissue in his ear, I fall into that camp too.

Ah,,,just remembered! Ear canal ablation...

that's serious stuff. I had it done on Otis a couple years ago and it turned out very well, after a couple weeks of healing. No more ongoing painful infections/draining and I know Herc will feel better now too. Also hope that the 2nd ear can be maintined w/out infection necessitating a 2nd surgery! Otis became an even stronger Mama's Boy after his surgery, but he adjusted pretty well and I guess I did too. Sending SMOOCHES to this patient! happy.gif

Welcome news for Herc...

please refresh me on what procedure he had done. happy.gif
