Help...I spoke too soon...Hooch bit my father

He sometimes gets funny with him when I AM AROUND only. My dad walked between us and he bit his calf, broke the skin. then he ran. put peroxide and bacitracin...does he need antibiotics. i am so upset.

luvwinnie's picture

Absolutely, just want to discuss with his vet first...we

are having xrays done of hips when he has his throat surgery in Feb so I do wonder if he is in pain also. Then I will consult with the trainer who worked with us over a year ago.

She knows the issues

Michelle has brought hooch a long way

Michelle

So sorry this happened. You have been able to do so much for him. hope your dad is ok

It's not a bad idea to rule out a medical condition

first though Rae. wink.gif

a vet is not a behavior specialist though

and while they can give insight they are usually strictly medical. Sort of like seeing your GP when you need a therapist, not the same thing happy.gif

Michele

I can imagine how upset you are and I also KNOW how much you and Jorge have done for Hooch since you've rescued him - it's so much different and harder with rescues. I'm so sorry this happened and wish I was there to give you hugs. I hope it heals quickly on its own for your dad. Big hugs sent your way.

Oh Michele...

I'm so sorry this happened.

I am fully confident that you will get through this. You love for Hooch is boundless and I know you will figure out (with some help), what snaps in him to make him bite.

Hope your dad is OK...

Hang in there!

Re:Help...I spoke too soon...Hooch bit my father

So sorry to hear this. Yes, I would be very careful with this bite since it broke skin. Clean it out with lots of flushing and soak it to help clean it out. Antibiotics may very well be in order. As to Hooch's behavior, are you planning to get a behaviorist for help. IMHO, trusting Hooch now is not an option, and dangerous things may ensue. What if he chooses this behavior when your back is turned or your guard is down? Some one may choose to sue. That will bring the legal and governmental laws into play and that is expensive $ wise and emotion wise. Are you prepared to lose or put Hooch down, because of this behavior. For his and your sakes, get help now! Help will keep you both safer.

gotta really watch for infection with this...

Amy went through this on the board..here
really gotta watch for infection.
any signs of it ..see a doctor asap.
there are usually red lines that run out of the bite mark and that is a sign that you need to see someone as soon as possible

other then that...
hope your Dad feels better
sounds like Hooch has some jealousy issues going on there..
I have not had an issue with any bulldog that nips anyone so not much help..

Oh Michele, I am sorry that happened.

I can say from experience to watch that wound carefully. Clean it super well with peroxide, really get it into the wound. Then use Bacitracin or better yet, Neosporin. Keep it washed and clean twice a day until you see some healing. Any redness moving away from the wound will need to be treated with antibiotics, but watch it and see before you have to report a dog bite to the doctors, who in turn WILL report it to the proper authorities. Redness around the edges of the wound are common, but anything that is hot to the touch or starts to swell should be looked at.

oh no

maybe he just got spooked, as long as it is kept clean, and maybe put on some antibotic cream it should be ok, I got bit prety bad by Rocky, i kept it clean and it was fine, hope both are ok,

Well, at least he bit and ran. Didn't hang on...

Sounds like a fear bite. Could have been much worse. Good thing it was your dad and not the FedEx man! Junior air snapped at our neighbor up in Tahoe one time. He did touch her with his teeth, but he didn't bite down or leave any mark. It was a "get away from me" warning. The lady told some of the neighbors and now he has a reputation. I cried about it. Then we just became extra careful with him around strangers.

He's mellowed now that he is 8, but we still put him away when anyone comes over. Weird thing is that he's fine at the vet's office with everyone. Maybe because they aren't afraid of him. Last time we were there he walked right by a black lab without a second glance. Normally he would lunge. I guess he was happy to be leaving.

I know how hard you have worked with Hooch on his allergies and behavior. He's a good boy for you and that is what is most important. Think about how far he has come and just be more mindful of him around others. He can probably never be fully trusted, so the best thing is to avoid any iffy situation, continue to work with him, and never test him.

Is your dad afraid of him? Dogs can detect fear which can maybe trigger a fear reaction. Bite first before I get bit! I'm going to a training seminar this weekend. Maybe I'll ask about that.

You should come with me! The seminar is about Adolescent Dog Behavior and there is another speaker after it is over who will discuss BAT (Behavior Adjustment Training). You can google about BAT training to find info.

Michelle hope your dad is ok

and hope you find some answers for Hooch's behavior. Hugs to you and Hooch.

Oh my...

So sorry to read this, Michele!
Hope your Dad's OK. I have faith that you'll get to the root of Hooch's behavior and get it taken care of.
