HELP!! Vet suggest "lipo" to help Lucy's vulva dry. This doesn't sound right.

All, I need advice.

Lucy had some pimple looking things erupting around her vulva. I took her into the vet. The vet gave me some "Malaseb" pledglet wipes for me to wipe her pee-pee. Over a 10 day period, the pimples dried flat and the area turned dark brown/red like tear stains.

The vet claims that she has too much fat hanging over her pee-pee (from the back) and that's causing moisture to trap down there and become infected. She says it itches and then Lucy licks it. She put lucy on antibiotics and the wipes. If it's not better in 10 days she wants to do a lipo type surgery to remove the fat.

I'm not buying this. We've only had Lucy one month. When I got her, her pee-pee was normal colored with no pimples. She's always had that fat. I don't want her to go through surgery unnecessarily. Does anybody have advice?

advice..

Find another vet!

NO clue here... I would get a 2nd opinion from someone who can c

Good luck!

sorry... i don't have advice but...

I am just in shock that your dog can reach her pee pee. Otis cannot reach his tush or his privates...good luck. to me it doesn't sound normal, but I am not an expert or a vet...

huh?

Kandace-
I have an incontinent dog. If I can keep Maggie from perpetual UTIs in diapers, I think your vet is a little "extreme." Her vulva is very loose and lacks tone as she has no muscle control or feeling there.

Clemmmie, my new senior has a similar issue.

I don't understand why this vet won't help you with a routine? IMO, you should be able to wipe after she pees and apply something to help it stay dry and also something to deter licking.

Desitin, gold bond? a little bit of diluted bitter apple?

Sounds like he/she is a little cut-happy to me......I have found that there are just certain vets who think different ways. There has to be more ways that you can manage this than surgery.

Best wishes,
Kris

I've heard of a surgery to cut back the skin

When I first got lola I noticed that everytime I cleaned her, it was a dark brownish color. the Vet said that as long as I clean her often, she wont need the surgery. I clean her with a baby wipe every night before bed and haven't had a problem. If you have done this and she is still irritated, I would get a second opinion.

Hi,

How old is your bitch? A friend of mine has an older bitch, 7 years old, who had to much fat around her private area. It, too, caused her problems. It's my understanding that the vet cut away some of the skin & fat so the private could get more air.

I have not heard of lipo on a dog.

All I know is that...

Elsa gets them, too. I've never heard of lipo for a dog - and I don't know of any bulldogs that can lick themselves - Elsa surely can not. For Elsa, I wipe her with wipes and them dry her with a washcloth and then apply desitin all around her privates. If she has pimples, neosporin has helped. They clear up within a day - & sometimes they have been bad. Sometimes I take vinegar and water solution to clean her "down there" as my vet said to try it on her wrinkles on her face & it helped with the stains - that I believe are caused from a yeast. Elsa is very wrinkly, too...I would get a 2nd opinion from another dr.

Hope this helps!
