Help, please....

Atlas had diarrhea this morning and pooped all over during the night. We cleaned it up this and took him out and he had the same outside. He ate normally, so we did not think much of it.

Well, I just got home from work and there was runny poop EVERYWHERE in his area (laundry room). I took him right outside and he squatted to poop several times. I cleaned up the poop which had things in it (mulch, small pebbles) which I am guessing he ate at camp yesterday.

I fed him, which he ate normally, though not as fast. I went and changed clothes and he did not come up with me (strange). When I came back down a few minutes later, he had pooped again and this time it seemed somewhat bloody.

I am really worried now. Should I take him to the ER vet? Does he have some kind of blockage? Does this sound normal to anyone? Please help.

Thanks.

Dozer had this happen once after he splintered a rib bone and at

He pooped everywhere just like your bullie and by the 3rd or 4th bout of the runs we started seeing blood. I ran to the vet all freaked out and they told me it's common when they have severe stomach upset to see a little bit of blood or a blood tinge to their stools. She gave us an antibiotic and had us give him 2 immodium caplets with each meal along with pumpkin. In a couple days he was back to his normal self and we never gave him those rib bones again, lol.

Not what I would term "an emergency" but I would take him

to the regular vet in the morning, even if you have to drop him off to be examined when they can fit him in (no regular appointment available). From all the poops and diarrhea its not surprising that you saw blood in his poops, especially reddish blood which would be from the rectum (last path of waste before it leaves his body) from irritation as well as the 'foreign matter = cinders and such. I would withhold breakfast tomorrow but allow him to have water, presuming he's already had dinner tonight. Vet may give him something to relax the spasms in his colon and also recommend no food tomorrow, just liquids, to give his pipes a rest.

Poor guy!---

He wouldn't be pooping if he had an obstruction. It sounds more like he's reacting to something ingested. As long as he's drinking to remain hydrated, he should be OK.

Hope he feels better real soon.

My shar-pei have had this

When they do I with hold food for 24 hours. My vet usually puts them on Metronidazole. The blood isn't unusual. Sometimes mine have had projectile blood coming out when they go to the bathroom. It's scary. But I would be concerned with the pebbles an mulch too. I don't think that this is why he is having bloody diarhea though. There is also something called endosorb, which I give to them two pills for each loose movement.

I'm sorry I can't help you but...

I would be going to the vet right away.

I hope poor Atlas feels better soon.

Have a great day, and don't forget to kiss someone you love!

I have heard that blood is common

when they get diarrhea like that. I would be scared too though! Poor Atlas! Don't know if you'd want to give him something to stop it, maybe it's best he gets it out of his system?

Or I should have said...

a CALL to the vet. I hadn't thought about the irritation from the diarrhea causing the blood, but that WOULD be a reason to have bloody stool. I agree, don't feed him anything else tonight. Call the ER vet and ask for recommendation for a tummy calmer, like Flagyl or similar. I would definitely get some plain pedialyte or similar to stave off dehydration which is a concern right now because of the amount and length of time he has had the diarrhea.

Cheryl, sorry to heat that Atlas is not feeling well.

Think I would give vet a call.
We did have something very much like this happen to our first bulldog Rocky. Don't know what he ate but he got severe diarrhea for a couple days that started to have some blood in it. First called our vet and they had us try giving him immodium for the diarrhea and also pepto bismol for the tummy. Don't remember doses but someone here probably would know. With Rocky it didn't work and we ended up having to take him in. Don't remember what he was given then but it took a few days to get whatever he had out of his system then he was OK. The blood was very scary but we were told that it was probably caused from the irritation.
Hope Atlas is better soon. Keep us posted.

Poor baby

I would at least call the ER vet and see what they say. I'm sure his GI tract is very iritated from everything he ate. Don't give him anything to eat tonight as his tummy needs to rest. Then I would feed him soft foods like chicken or hamburger and rice. He definitely needs meds soon.

after that much...

diarrhea, they will bleed due to all of the irritation. I have a spaniel that this happens to....whenever she eats something bad, gets diarrhea for even just three times it has blood it in.

At this point, he is uncomfortable just by your description of how he is acting. I would take him to the vet to get some tummy meds (I like Flagyl)

If it weren't for the blood, I'd say it's OK, but...

You should post this on the med board if you haven't already done that and then at least call the ER vet. Perhaps others who know more will post.
