My bully Duke seems to have a little irritation in his eye it looks a little bit red and irritated. Not sure what is causing it. We bought some eye drops for dogs (looks just like human eye drops only for dogs) called Hy-Optic (brand is Kinetic) (with Hyaluronic Acid). We have been using those and some days it works other it seems to have no effect. My breeder that we got our pug from suggested that we put a drop of Cod Liver Oil in his eye (1 drop 4 times a day) She said that All her puppies get the cod liver oil put in when they first open their eyes, keeps them moist and clean and has lots of vitamins specifically used for eyes. Has anyone else used this method before? I trust my breeder and my pugs eyes are bright and clear and she used this method on her so I dont see any harm but would like to double check. Let me know if you have used this and what your experience was. Also if you know of any other meds I could use for this irritation please let me know. I want my little man to feel better:( Thanks!
I've used Mineral Oil because....
It's sometimes found in some eye lubricating drops.
worked fine.
Sue
eyes and ears? Maybe it's allergies..
Have you tried giving him (25mg little pink pill) Benedryl? Of course you should have your vet check him out and do a culture on his ears.
no, for Lucy's eyes we're using Refresh Liquigel
and like I posted a week or so ago, it's amazing. Now that she's used to the drops (before that we used ointments), I think she actually likes them. Clearly, they make her feel a lot better. It's really amazing.
Yes..its ok for the eyes.
.
Its a delicate balance between keeping the ears "clean"
and not too "moist" because that encourages bacteria and yeast to grow. If there's an active infection, need to clear that with a/b's first, then talk with your vet specifically re keeping ears healthy.
The entire pathway systems of eyes/ears/nose/throat can become infected and the problems travel from one spot to another, so to speak, so if there's an active ear infection, its not unusual to find some problem with the eyes also. Plain eye a/b such as Gentocin 2xday for a week usually clears up a minor infection for my bullie...and he is getting cyclosporine daily for dry-eye (that goes "over" the eye meds, or given 5-10mins later).
Ear gunk = vet visit :(
Unfortunately the breed is very prone to ear infections, yeast and bacteria that no amount of cleaning can always take care of. Of course, regular cleaning helps stave off a bout of the the "nasties" but if you already see black/brown schmutz in his ears, it's time for the vet to do a quick culture and get your boy fixed up fast!
Didn't want to scare you but.....
I have a rescue baby with dry eye - she needs cyclosporine drops for the rest of her life. One of the vets who does volunteer work for this particular rescue group tried to help me defray the cost of her cyclosporine eye ointment($30 month) with a concentrate that got mixed with extra virgin olive oil ($90 for more than she will ever use in her lifetime). He gave me the dosage - how much concentrate to mix with how much olive oil and I did it and gave her drops for a couple of weeks.
It may have been that she just wasn't used to having anything in her eyes and here comes gooey-sticky muck in her eye but I swear, you would have thought I was dropping battery acid in her little eye. After a week or two I just threw the whole mix out and chocked it up to experience. She still doesn't "like" the ointment but she tolerates it and doesn't run practically screaming across the room. I swear, I checked and re-checked the mixture before administering it to her.
No long term damage done but I'd agree with Jean, if it's just cod liver oil, drop it in your eye to make sure it doesn't burn like the devil before putting it in Duke's eye.
Hope this helps! Best of luck!
And another thing....
He also has very gunky ears... lots of crap building up and we clean them all the time and it just comes right back...could this be the start of an ear infection? (so many problems at once!) Just want to get some advice before racking up the vet bills again
Re: Have used oils....
What sort of negative results did you get? and also the cod liver oil wouldn't be mixed with any type of meds, just a drop of the oil 4 times a day in the eye... I will take your word for it if you had bad results though, We wouldnt wanna put poor Duke at risk. Thanks!
Never heard of that b-4. but I'd try it on my own eye first
just so i'd know it didn't burn or somthing.
Have used oils......
.....mixed with concentrated doses of meds and did NOT have a good result!!!
Please wait till someone can confirm the use of this oil in your baby's eyes - mine have had VERY NEGATIVE results and I'd like to see you and yours spared any pain and discomfort if possible!
Please also cross-post on the medical board!!!
I used castor oil successfully...
for my girl Rosie's dry eye. It was something I read about in an old Bulldogger issue--apparently many hunters put it in their hunting dogs eyes to keep them from getting damaged from burrs and stuff. Worked great for me and MUCH cheaper than the cycosporine
Are they just red...
or an infection?
Grady had really red eyes when we adopted him and the vet told us to just use Murine (from a drugstore) on them.
It's mild and it worked well just for irritation. His eyes cleared up in a couple of weeks after using it.
Goodluck!
