Going to Petsmart tonite - Adult food ... recommendations..

Ok guys, we have been feeding Molly Pro Plan by Pedigree for the past 4 months and its almost time to change to adult food, so we are goin to get one thing of the Pro Plan for Puppies, and also get adult food, does anyone feed their doggie Pro Plan for adults? She loves this stuff and I'm afraid to completly change foods, would rather feed her the same stuff she has now, but for adults, Molly will be 6 months old in about 3 weeks, is 6 months to soon to be changing over? She weighs 36 lbs.

See below . . .

Frannie,
This is in large part a personal viewpoint, but unless I identify a specific deficiency in diet or health, I am very careful about adding. My post under Kristae's question pretty much explains my rationale there.

That's not to say I don't add if I feel it's needed - I have used, with success in the past, Dermcaps (fatty acid supplement) for dry or lackluster coats - also seemed to help with one girl who was losing patches of hair, and Norwegian Kelp, which for some reason seems to help encourage pigmentation (the pup still had pink on the nose and around the eyes).

Fats, not protein and growth

My last post should refer to higher fat content in puppy food as opposed to protein. Anyway, quite a few breeders I've spoken to, as well as some reading, classifies bulldogs with large breed dogs as far as the possibility for bone development to get too accelerated and cause some problems like the 'puppy limps' when they're young. The theory I've read on this is that the bone growth can exceed cartilidge growth and cause discomfort at various stages of development.

Growing Too Fast

Why is it a concern if they grow too fast?

Changing to adult food

Frannie,
I've been advised by several breeders that 5 months is a good time to start thinking about changing over to adult food, so that the higher protein and nutrient contents in puppy food don't accelerate their growth too much (although we use a large breed puppy formula, so we sometimes wait a little longer unless the puppy seems to be growing too fast).
Sounds like her weight is on track to becoming a 50-55 pound girl, so I wouldn't see any reason not to change. Also, if Pro-Plan is working for her, then I wouldn't see any reason to change to a different brand at this time. Personally, I do a lot of research before I switch foods, and a couple of times I've switched and ended up coming back to the 'old standby' when all was said and done, so until you're convinced another brand would better serve the purpose, I'd stay with what works for her!
