Food is always an interesting topic

Josie Louise has done really well on NB Chicken and SP. Added a supplement once a day and no people food. She just seemed like she was getting past her skin issues as fast as I thought she should. researched raw, compared kibbles, looked at every grain free, and then look at human grade kibble as well. gave her some samples, and then decided on Wellness core 4 pound bag. Well withe the four pound bag came less poop, red face, sore puffy paws, and idc. and she wont jump up on the bed at night either. so back to NB Chicken and SP and I will have MORE patience with her skin clearing up. Amazing that only 4 pounds of a very good product just didnt work and the ability to get on the bed really scared me. I can handle a few mor poop scoops for her, that is the easy part. so just a "nice to know" story. She was so excited when she smelled ehr Chicken breakfast today!!! happy bouncy girl.

We did it

because when she was a puppy I gave her a little yogurt once in her food and she broke out like crazy and then she did not do well on a few foods we tried. I wanted to test her earlier just to know what she could and could not have so we didn't have to play the try this for a couple weeks game but the vet said to wait until she was at least a year. Once we got her on totw things went well until we moved she would start having these itching episodes that would last a few days where she would literally make her face bleed. So we got her tested found what she was allergic too and completely eliminated everything and she has been great since. I think it was the leftover kibble from Stan and the treats with flax in them.

what symptoms was she having that prompted you to test her?

Audrey was on a VERY limited diet and did very well, except for the tear stains. I probably shouldn't have added back two things at the same time like I did, now I don't know if it's the protein or the extra chemicals. I am thinking it's more likely the chemicals, so I guess I'll just have to stop giving her the freeze dried food to see if the smell stays away. I was SO happy I found a treat for her that she liked so much that was grain free!

The one we had

did not but Im sure they can with a scratch test. this one did all grasses food protein sources different grains household irritants. It does do some food additives because it did test for kelp and flaxseed oil and a couple other things and we found Stella was allergic to flaxseed oil so we had to change her treats.

can they test for allergies against chemical additives?

I already KNOW she can't have grains, even a small bite of bread or corn and she is scratching her face. She was smell free almost immediately after switching her to raw, which has very limited ingredients, and I just noticed the smell today after frequently giving her the freeze dried food for the past 2 weeks, and it has a lot of added chemicals, I haven't looked them all up but I am assuming they are vitamins.

I must say

if anyone has though about allergy testing it is well worth the money just to know. We did it with our female and found out she was allergic to Stans food so the little kibbles she was scrounging off the floor were no good also found out she is allergic to yeast so if she has a breakout of yeast it will be twice as bad as she is allergic to it. Once we found out what to keep her away from we have had absolutely no issues.

It IS an interesting topic

and you quickly realize that dogs are truly individuals when it comes to their food needs. We managed to get rid of Audrey's itchiness and yeasty ears and smelly face, but we still have tear stains. I thought I noticed a yeasty smell under her nose rope today. We have her on beef protein now, AND I have been giving her freeze dried beef as treats. I don't know if it's the beef, or something in the freeze dried food. I noticed the freeze dried has a LOT of extra chemical supplements in it. She may really be sensitive to that more than anything else. I think I need to add an enrty to my raw diet diary...

food

food issues have been my problem..not charlies..he seems okay on anything not chicken.
But I want whats best, so I am now trying the canisource , dehydrate raw food made into kibble, he loves it a bit too much , he steals his sisters dinner, something charlie has never done before, he was just never a food guy.
Only issue so far its 90.00 for a 10 kg box

Re: I have to find some

Cathy, I was just at Costco and checked out the dog food/treats while I was there... they have some jerky (I saw chicken and duck) for dogs that is only the meat (says breast strips), salt and vegetable cellulose (?) I dont' remember the price, but I think it was less than $10 for a pretty good size bag... and you could cut them in smaller peices... do you think Audrey could eat that?

she doesn't eat kibble

she eats raw. I could cook some of the raw, but it won't keep very long. I may have to do that once training classes start again.

I have to find some

and make sure it has limited ingredients. she has some lamb liver jerky but it's expensive and I can only get it at the store where I get her food, about 30-45 mins away, depending on traffic. She seems to tolerate lamb very well.

that too stella falls for it stan does not

onslowsmom's picture

Or act like her kibble is a treat

maybe she won't know the difference. Sometimes Onslow doesn't. haha

For treats

can you just give her the basic liver training treats?

CathyandAudrey's picture

I hear ya on the food trial game!

Audrey wasn't experiencing anything quite that bad, but we did notice a very swift and profound difference when we switched her. I think I am just going back to the BASIC ingredient food, she really LOVES to eat it, it's just hard to not have ANY treats to give her.
