Flexi leash trouble advice

OK, you ask, how could a person get injured by a retractable leash? Last weekend, a neighbors very nice Westie was walking by and they stopped to talk and play with Flora and the kids. The Westie was on a retracable leash with the thin rope that retracts. It zipped behind me and caught me at the bend of my knee in the back. I got a rope burn about 3 inches long from this and put ointment on it. By Mon afternoon it was raging and infected. I had to take antibiotics to calm it down. It is still a mess, but getting better. Moral of the story, watch the back of your legs. You never know where that leash has been. Can you imagine: drug all over the country on walks. I am not sure an older bully could go fast enough to do this, but maybe an energetic puppy could.

Ours got stuck under Mollys tail and we couldnt get it out it wa

initially caused her yeast infection in her tail... I only use them with caution...

i hate those!

i read a story about a woman who was suing the company. evidently she had her dog on the lead and she had the line wrapped around her hand. well, her dog took off and so did some of her fingers!! she didn't win, as the instructions state NOT to hold the line, but still!

nothing more that i hate is an uncontrollable dog 10ft out from their owner on one of these leads. ugh.

hope your leg feels better.

Thanks for the info ....

I always felt "out-of-the-groove" at shows because I hadn't spent the money for the slick retractable leads. We don't have a need for them now, but should the time come that we return to a show setting, I won't give those retractables another thought!

Similar story here...

I was at the beach once, and this older couple was walking their Golden Retriever. The lady starts toward me but, her dog went berzerk. Their dog was on a retractable leash, and when it got all excited, it ripped the handle right out of the ladies hand. Well, silly me, I felt bad for the lady who got all distraught. I grab onto the rope part of the leash as the dog runs by, and the dog keeps going. I didn't hold on for long, it burned the heck out of both of the palms of my hands. Ouch! I think for a little dog they are okay, but I can tell you that lady shouldn't have been using one.

I hate Flexi leashes!

This is actually not uncommon, so don't feel bad. I've heard stories of people biking on a mountain trail, only to suddenly turn around a bend and be clothes-lined by a flexi leash. I think someone should start a national campaign to put a stop to flexi leashes or at least make people take a training course on how to use one. "Excuse me mam, can I see your flexi leash license."
Hope you feel better soon.

I'm not fond of the retractibles..i had a friend whose cocker...

her (the cocker)..and it sliced a line .across her side of her face like a kinfe would..I know that many use them ..andhave no problem with them..but after watching my friend nurse the cockers face...I use an extra long 20 footer when I want to let the yelpsters have more freedom...hope your healing...ouch...blessings ...ce

that stinks... those thinks are menacing!

hope you heal soon and fast!

similar story here too.....

My sister sometimes let her cocker spaniel outside on one of the tie out lines made of the same stuff as those retractable leashes, she did this to give the dog some outdoor time and so that he does not run away, he didn't stay tied up long.... Well, one day a couple of years ago, I went to see my sister and the dog was outstide, he got excited and was behind me but decided to run towards me, I got clothesline from behind and also got one heck of a burn on the back of my calf. After a couple of days it too got worse, and then it took forever to heal, as I'm a diabetic. To this day I still have a straight line scar on the back of my leg and sometimes get asked if I had surgery there for something because the scar is just one perfectly straight line. Needless to say the sister finally got a fenced in yard after that.....
