Hi All, I would like to know if anyone has had a litter of puppies that are flat chested? Let me be more specific. The puppies are not "puffed out" on the breast bones and ribs, rather they are flat, so when you hold them they feel a little strange/ the bottom half of them are just "flat". Is this normal> ? I was interested in another bully, but when i visited, everything looked great, but the puppies felt different than others I have looked at? does this change, is it normal, should I still leave a deposit?>Thank you all, Sissy
Swimmer pups..
The pups need to be put on lots of fluffed up blankets so they can get the weight and pressure off of their ribs.
How old are the pups?
You mention about looking to buy, so these aren't your pups. The advice given by Shelly and Helen is correct, but in reading your post, you don't have the pups. You might mention to the "breeder" your concern and what should be done.
This does need to be corrected if possible. Otherwise, if they get older, 8 weeks and up, they will remain flat chested. Two issues here, first, it changes their appearance and is not correct as far as showing. Secondly, healthwise, you can have more respiratory problems with those pups because it is pushing against the lungs, diaphram, and could cause problems.
Flat chests
These pups need to have hill and valleys in their box so they can crawl around and over things and not lay flat on a flat surface. How old are they? If under 3 weeks once they start walking and moving around their chest may fill out fine especially if they are gotten off the flat surface.
Hills and valleys can be made with small towels twisted/bunched up and placed in the bottom of the pen/box and covered with an old soft baby blanket or you can make knots in those old socks that the washer ate the other one and use them under the blanket.
flat chested and sunken in chests
Hi Patty,
The pups are three weeks old.
They are very fine looking, with the exception of looking so flat. Since I never saw that before, when i held one, it was sort of strange. I am going to have to mention it. I did say felt different, but she said it was normal. Well, thank you everyone who posted a response. Sissy
