I bred my english bulldog the end of March. I took her to the vet a week ago and he did an ultrasound and said he did not detect any puppies. He also took an xray. I understand the false pregnancy can be very close to the real thing, she had morning sickness, enlarged and pink nipples, has gained 10lbs since April 1st( with no extra feeding) and her vaginal opening is enlarged. Her belly hangs down and is very firm. The x-ray and ultrasound were very expensive and he told me he could do them again in a couple of weeks if I wanted him to. My question is, do you think I should spend the money to have the tests again? She would have been about 40 days along last week and he did do the ultrasound also, but I am afraid to close the book without looking into it as when I was younger, my parents had a bulldog and I watched her go into labor in the middle of the night, we lost a puppy and almost lost the mother before we finally got a hold of the vet. Do you think if she had puppies they would have shown up on the tests last week? Thanks for your time
pregnancy
At 40 days of gestation and an ultrasound, you would have seen something if she is pg. If you are still uncertain I woudl do the test again in a couple of weeks. The expense should not be a concern, if she is pg, you are going to have ALOT more expenses, so you best be prepared.

Yes, I definitly will. It would be scary and I probably wouldnt sleep around the due date! Thank you for your reassurance.
I would
I would go back for my own peace of mind and later you may have to take her in for a C. Who knows there could just be one puppy and sometimes they will pull them up in the ribs and you won't know .
sometimes
ok, thanks. I just wasnt sure if it was a yes or no situation, I guess I will wait another week and go back.
Sometimes-
The bitch will hold the puppies up in the rib cage and you won't bbe able to see them but at 40-45 days they can take an xray and see if there is any in there. The bones start calicyfying [spelling] anyway get harder and can be seen then. It would be worth the money to me to have her checked again be for her due date.
do you have any pics?
I hope someone else will join up and give you some reassurance one way or the other.
Best of luck

false pregnancy
After she was bred, I spoke with my vet over the phone, He specifically said not to increase her feeding only to put half puppy food and half regular.
if you thought she was pregnant, why didn't you feed her extra?
I dunno much about this stuff, but there are tests you can do to detect certain hormones, I think.

If she would have been 40 days along and the vet found nothing...I dunno, I would like to think that something would have been detected.
Best of luck,
false pregnancy
I did the same thing today and my vet told me the same thing. This is the vet that done her AI 3 times. She thought at first and still said it may be way up in the ribs but i waas there and i saw nothing or at least i agreed that there was nothing from what she was saying. My girl has gone through all the stuff that they go through for a pregnancy and today would have been her 41st day pregnant. I am not sure what to think at this point and so we will try again if not. I believe the vet knows what she is saying and i am just so baffled as to why not.
