I just noticed Lincoln's right ear is red and has ALOT of wax in it. I cleaned it out and put some Conofite which I got from the vet the last time he had an ear infection. I also have Otomax which is good for yeast in the ear, I think. Is anyone familiar with either of these drugs and does anyone know what the difference is when there is yeast in the ear and how to tell? Lincoln's ear looks just like it did when he had his last ear infection, I'm just confused on which drops I should use. Thanks for any help!

Just the one for now
I would just rinse the other ear to clean it out to avoid possible infection and use the Otomax only in the ear that has the yeast for now. No need to put in the expensive meds if the other ear is okay but if you notice a foul odor and build up, then give the Otomax in that ear as well. Whenever I've had a dog with an ear infection, it's only been in one ear, not both at the same time. Wonder why ?

The daily ear wash combined with the Otomax should start to work within a few days and you should continue with the Otomax for a few days after the ear is better.
Since we are starting our warm weather, if you continue to give weekly ear washes in both ears, that will help to stop moisture from forming. The home made mixture is bascially just a cleanser and will help to keep the canal dry but the Epi Otic, Nolvasan and others do contain ingredients that help to stop yeast and bacteria.
He'll be better in no time
Thanks Sue..
I will try that. Do you think I should put the meds in both his ears or just the one? Only one is red but I can't remember if last time he had an ear infection if we put it in both ears or not.

Ears meds
Hey Jacob, sorry the big guy has a yeast infection.

Just like Robin, I too, use Epi Otic cleanser followed by Otomax.
If the Conofite is not an ear wash, it may be a good idea to get one and use that daily to flush the ear before giving the Otomax. It will bring up wax and crud. You can make your own solution too by using 1/3 each of water, vinegar and peroxide. Put in a squirt bottle and shake well. Good idea to do it outside so when he shakes his ear it doesn't get on the walls or furniture
If Lincoln has sore, red ear flaps (inside), you can also rub some Otomax on them as well. When you do put it in his ear, rub his ears to help the Otomax go down into the canal.
Hope he feels better.
Thanks alot!
I will start giving him the otomax!

Ingredients in conofite and otomax
I did a search on them and the Otomax has an antibiotic, antifungal, and a steroid. The Conofite just has an antifungal in it. The vets usually do a swab to see what is in there bacteria, fungi or both. The cover all bases way to do things would be the Otomax.
Good luck. Hope he is feeling better soon.
Otomax and Epi-Otic...
Maggie had a yeast infection in her ears as well as a bacterial infection in the same ear.. We were told to use Epi-Otic to cleanse the ear and the Otomax to treat the infection. Worked great for us. Maggie seems to have recurring yeast in her ears and we are working with her diet to see if we can alleviate and get control over these infections. Good Luck!!
