(we stayed at the Super 8 in Gardiner, MT ... just outside the north entrance of YNP. We put up a small tree in our room and my husband cooked Christmas Eve lobster tails outside on our portable grill. It's quaint festivity ... but is sure LOTS OF FUN!)

No .... haven't stayed at the lodge

I would like to one day. It's on the spendy side. In the winter, you can only get to it by snow-coach ... another expense. And Dubby wouldn't be able to go.

In the winter, we stay at Gardiner. The road is open all year for private vehicles between Mammoth Hot Springs and Cooke City, the northern part of the park. We can make a couple of trips back-and-forth during the short daylight hours of winter, and see alot in that time.

Mammoth Hot Springs, like Old Faithful, has alot of thermal activity to see and photograph.

USA Today just had an article about winter vacations in Yellowst

it's in this weekend's issue. The article says that for many people, winter is the best time to go. Among other things, they noted that it's often easier to see the animals against the backdrop of all the snow.

Have you stayed at the Old Faithful Lodge?

Love the pics.
