Dr. Pitcairns?

For those of you who feed using recipes from Dr. Pitcairn's book,
I just got it from the store and I have a few questions.
He recommends using garlic, but I have read that garlic is toxic to bulldogs?!
I also find the information really scattered, it reads like a novel instead of an informational book.

sigh, I was hoping for lists and clear instructions.

Thanks in advance!

garlic is all i use for....

flea and tick prevention...i use nothing else...except black walunt for heartworm....a small amount of fresh garlic every day....will keep the fleas and ticks away....
what are you looking to do for a diet...if your cooking..donald strombeck book for home cooked diets is very easy...has a load of diets....gives you calories ect....easy to understand also....

Well i just did a bit more reading

And from what I can tell garlic in super large quantities can be toxic.
But the small amount we are talking about is beneficial

I'm starting w/ pork 'cause she hasn't eaten it before

I started w/ pork because it's a novel protein for Winnie. Then I was planning on adding other protein sources back into her diet slowly. I've ordered chicken livers for her next batch. Hopefully she'll be able to tolerate them. I plan to mix the livers w/ other sources ie pork to give her a balanced diet. I'll let you know how it goes.
Good luck.

That's what I thought

Garlic is supposed to have anti-inflammatory/bacterial properties?

Hi and Thank you

Wow, that is great. Thank you.
So you cook the meat? In the book it says to cook everything but the meat.

And you only give her pork? You don't mix up the meat like the book says?

Thanks so much for your help with this, Stella is having allergies and I really want to help her with it by giving her good food that I know is healthy for her.

I've never read that garlic is a problem for dogs...

we know that ONIONS are toxic, but garlic and fresh parsley would be good flavorful additives to homemade diet.

Here's what I did (long)

My girl Winnie has had a tough time with commercial dog food until finally we had to start cooking for her. I got the Pitcairn book along w/ some advice on BDW and figured out a recipe. Here goes: I ordered the supplements in the pitcairn book and made up a batch of the Healthy Powder. I cook a lean pork roast (a novel protein for Winnie)about 4 lbs. in the crock pot, then I boil up cubed red potatoes w/ the skin around 10 lbs. and about 3 large sweet potatoes cubed. I make a big batch of old fashioned oats around 10 cups of oats w/ the juice off the roast (separate the fat out) plus water. I do salt it a little and I add a bag of frozen peas too along w/ about 2/3 c. of the healthy powder. We add garlic 'cause I think it helps w/ the palatablity. Mix it all up and freeze it in gallon zip-loc bags. This recipe makes enough for two weeks. I feed 1 1/2 cup twice a day.
I've been doing this for around 6-8 weeks. She's been doing really well on it. She's lost some lbs. and her skin looks great! No gas or loose stools.
It's a lot of work but I think it's worth it.
I hope this helps.
