BTW, our life has been a circus around here. Last year in January we were finding out that my husband had prostate cancer & needed surgery. We figured 2010 would have to be a much better year. HOWEVER, now dh has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis & needs back surgery. His left leg is so weak that it buckled under his weight & he fell backwards down our entire flight of basement steps. It's a wonder he didn't break his neck but thankfully he survived the fall with a concussion & 7 stitches in his head. Anybully know anything about back decompression surgery? We see the orthopedic surgeon next Tues. You may recall that we also recently had to admit my sil to a nursing home due to her Alzheimer's & her husband's stroke. What's next?!? I don't think I want to know! happy.gif I want the flowers & sunshine to return too!!!

Me too.

I'll you both of you in my prayers.

p.s. My boss said his only regret was not having the surgery sooner. He could have avoided a lot of pain.

~~~~Thank You All...I'm reading all your notes~~~~
Ahhh...Thanks! I needed to hear that!
Our local doctor says the surgery will take care of the problem & I so hope that will be the case for my husband! happy.gif
Thanks Gary...
My husband has multilevel stenosis most severe at L3-4 & L3-5 with 95% narrowing. Our local doctor seemed to think surgery is the only option but we'll have to see what the orthopedic specialist says. Pain started around Thanksgiving & dh was sent to a physical therapist who seemed to help him. But then the leg just got so weak we started to think his cancer had something to do with it. MRI & x-rays ruled out a return of the cancer & showed the problem to be in the back. Our son-in-law had back surgery after he fell & crushed a vertebrae. I know he was in horibble pain after the surgery & I keep thinking about that too. Not good!
Judy, my boss had surgery for spinal stenosis in 2008
He did really well following it and was back to work in about 6 weeks. He was so happy to be pain free and able to walk comfortably.
I've had two back surgeries but neither was a decompression
does he experience a lot of pain from it? If so, the latest surgery I had is a new procedure called a radio frequency ablation. The procedure uses heat to burn away some nerves and lessen the pain. I'm not sure, tho, if it could help stop the leg from giving out.
I did have a problem back in the 1990s with one of my legs giving out on me. It happened once when I was going down some stairs, and I almost fell down but fortunately caught the rail just in time. At the time I had a herniated disc that was compressing against a spinal nerve root. It's a very eerie experience when your leg just suddenly gives away like that. After I had what was my first back surgery, which included a laser discectomy and laminectomy at L4-5, my leg stopped giving out on me and my lumbar spasms stopped. But wow, the pain after the surgery was much worse than the pain before the surgery, tho for safety reasons it was good that my leg no longer gave out on me.
Good luck to your husband. I hope his surgery is very successful or, preferably, not necessary.
