I need to get a seatbelt for Ruby and I have heard that a Ruffrider is the best. Where can I find this consumer information? I would like to see a comparison of all the doggie seatbelt brands. Thanks.
I never allow my dogs to roam around in the car while driving. This is dangerous not only to me, but to them too. In the horrid event of an accident, dogs can fly through windshields as people can. In an accident, a crate will keep a dog from flying out of the car, but not necessarily from escaping injury. A seatbelt will do the same. I think it is important to sit dogs in the back seat, away from the possibility of air bags (same applies to small children). The harness should fit properly as well and be attached to a short strap looped through the seatbelt. The bottom line is that there are safety issues for everyone while riding in a car...but hopefully greatly reduced for our Bullies by riding in a crate or wearing a seatbelt. Just my opinion - not from research, just common sense. I can't recommend any brands over another. We love our Bulldogs too much not to want to protect them!
about taking my bulldog on a long car ride. That is a great suggetion too, to fill up the space on the floor in the front seat. Do you think the airbags are a real concern? I've heard that you should have the same concern for a dog in the front seat with the airbags as you would with a young child. I don't know how Sheldon will do in my back seat, it is so small. He does ride in the back seat of our SUV, all the time, but I won't be taking that car.
Anyhow, to answer your question re where we got our Roadie and how much it cost. We got it where Sheldon goes to doggie day care, Central Bark. It was thirty something dollars. I'm pretty sure they don't sell it at Petsmart. I think you can purchase it on their website: http://www.ruffrider.com/. They also have a store locator on the site. Hope this helps.
Glad to hear Fluff is well. Sheldon loves his Roadie. We first had the regualr kind from Petsmart. The Roadie is much better. Doubles as a harness, too.
They had the cheapest prices that I could find on the internet. I cannot speak for their total service since I have not yet received the harness.
On a recent day trip we bought a very cheap (like $5) seat belt which was simply a strap that you threaded the seatbelt through then attached his existing harness, which I do not like. It worked ok, but it was very thin and did not do much for my confidence in case of an accident.
One more thing, on the link I sent you there is a link that you can visit which will take an additional 5% off from your order just for visiting. Good luck.
The ruffrider people will send you an article from a vet school. www.ruffrider.com
I can tell you that the nylon webbing used in the ruffrider vs. the Petsmart type ones is much thicker and stronger appearing. The ruffrider fits the bully physique, too, compared with other ones I tried on. Do not let your bully eat off the plastic clips off the ruffrider. Flora did and I had to get another one.
Thank you for the link. I appreciate it!

Just saw your response to my question yesterday...
