What is the probability?
Winston will be 2 in August. At one year old he had surgery to correct a luxiating patella which was diagnosed at 5 months old(dr wanted to wait until he was older). Yesterday he started limping and today he is not putting much weight or no weight on his other (left) leg. I am watching him and keeping him quiet and tomarrow I am going to make an appointment with Dr. Shaw-the bulldog vet that did his surgery. What I am curious about is the likelyhood(sp) of him having the same problem in his other leg?
Thanks-he may have just pulled a muscle or something but I have no idea when he did it yesterday?!?! So I am just worried he may have to have surgery again!

when farcus went in for his, shaw did advise us that his other knee had the same problem, but was only a grade 1 and surgery was not needed.
Last post guys sorry for this thread
The mud hole is a class AAA musky lake that is spring feed-clean as can be. Hiking-no hiking around here just paved blocks to walk around. As you are aware of but for whatever reason are failing to remember you had Dr. Shaws number and my permission to get all records of Winstons visits-including xrays. I had my own apartment until Jan of last year then I moved into a very large house with my mother-beneficial for all involved although I don't know why this is of a concern to you. In fact I would think you would be happy she does not work so when I was at work there was someone home with him.
And I am sorry you are upset I feel that I have made a mistake also but there are several people on this board who have met me personally and Winston and I beleive they will vouch for Winstons health and happiness.
I am done this is going no where-we have had our problems before and I have tried to get over them and be nice. I asked for some opinions and that was what I was looking for not criticism.

Thank you Patti
That is what I was looking for-whether this was a possibility or not. I am making an appt as soon as they open to find what the problem is.
Yes Winston is active but he is no more active than many of the young dogs on here. I suppose I post about his activities more than about his laying and sleeping or cuddling because those stories are often more amusing but by no means does he endanger his kness by his activities.
The vet did tell me that arthritus is bound to come sooner or later and did already find some in the joint that had surgery prior to his surgery-due to the way the bones were rubbing etc. So I do expect that and it makes perfect sense that his other leg for a while got a lot more use than normal.
Thanks for your thoughts,

Re: not anon-its Kelly B
Why did you bring Winston back to us?
Why couldn't we see the x-rays? Why
would you say you had your own place
and then suddenly you don't? You never
told us that you GO HIKING at a relatives
cabin with Winston? You think that MUD
hole in the pic is a therapeutic activity? Shall I GO ON?
It's you who have upset my family. We love Winston..
And we have had a hard time dealing with our mistake.
Kelly, just a thought here
As you said, your vet diagnosed luxating patella at 5 months on his one leg. If his other leg was also affected, the vet would have known it then. So, I'm sure that is not the problem now.
It does sound like a pulled muscle, bruised joint. Also, even though he has had surgery on his one leg, you do need to know that you should limit excessive activity, including hard jolts, jumps, etc. When the surgery is done, it helps correct the situation, but the knee is still never the same as a perfect one, thus you'll be more likely to have arthritis, etc. show up.
It even could be that because of "favoring" the one with surgery (every so slightly that you don't realize it), it has caused him to put more stress on the other one when active.
Just my opinion, as you had mentioned, it was diagnosed at a younger age, so this wouldn't suddenly appear at 2 years old. In fact, I've known and seen Bulldogs with a luxating patella that never has surgery, and goes thru life fine. Just one needs to not be as active with running, fast turns, jumping, etc. to aggravate it.
Actually yes there are two doggie beaches..although I have not b

downtown Chicago has some really nice swimming holes?
Holly crap! Here we freaking go again!!!!

Also hiking Rod?
Yea I take him hiking all the time between the buildings of downtown Chicago and my suburban oasis that i live in-spot exagerating!
Well u are upsetting me-
Rod-
Swimming is a theraputic activity for anyone it is low impact exercise-the reason they use it for severly arthritic people-they also use it for therapy for dogs-they have water pools. Yes he does run and jump off of things as many peoples dogs do here funny though he hasnt done that yesterday or the day before so I have no CAUSED my dog any discomfort.
It is possible that he has a problem in his other leg-its going to be taken care of no matter what it is that is my concern.
ughh!!!!!!!!!!!
Swimming and hiking and jumping from bed to bed
is probably not a good idea for awhile...
After all - he is a bulldog and not a retriever...
Not trying to upset you Kelly... but the stuff
you have done with Winston, I wouldn't dream of doing
with ours.. We have ramps in the basement for dogs
to get on and off the couch. And I've seen post where
you talk about him flying off of things. ughh!
Dr. Shaw
Kelly,
I cannot answer your question. I have no idea about the probability of this occurring again in the other leg. But, I was pleased to see that you are seeing Dr. Shaw. Is he not the best Bully Vet around?? I absolutely love him, and he is so very good with our beloved babies.
Please let us know what he says.

Poor Winston
I'm sure it is nothing serious. Good Luck to your little baby. Lots of hugs and kisses to Winston:)
My lil guy is so active!!
We walk 2 miles in the morning and 2 miles at night everyday. We have done this everyday since he was able to when we got him home. We live at the beach and he thinks he is a surfer, he loves the waves. We hike and swim. My lil guy is all muscle!!! He is in the "skinny" side as I hear over and over and over from people who think they know it all. As there studs can barly breath just standing there and are so dirty. Who is to say or not say what a bullie can do or not do. they only thing I dont like Angus doing is jumping in the back yard, this is his new thing. We have 2 level and he poops up on top and likes to zoom right after he "drops off the kids" adn leaps off a 4 foot ledge!!! This is not good and we are trying to break him of it. But all in all he is so healthy!!!
I love my active Bullie and wouldnt change him for nothing!!!
