Crooked jaw

I've never posted here before, but I can't think of a better place to ask the question: How big of a fault is a crooked jaw? The breed standard says it is a "serious fault", but what does that mean for a dog that is very strong in every other area? I have a 6 month old female that I bought with hopes of showing that has developed a "tipped" jaw over the last few months. Her lower jaw tips, so her bottom canine on one side sticks out further than the other and gives her a "fat lip" appearance on that one side. I had the breeder take a look at her and she told me NOT to spay her because of it, that she could still be bred--but I would like to hear opinions from others who are familiar with the breed.

what is the difference between a crooked jaw...

and a wry jaw? I'm just curious, does any body have pictures.

I wouldn't either..

Sorry but a wry jaw should not be bred.

If she were mine I would not breed her

If she can't be shown the why would you brred a dog with a serious fault. Now there is a difference between a wry jaw and what you are seeing. But jaws are so important in this breed that it is just wrong to breed a dog with this type of fault. MHO

Re: Wait till she matures to see

I will post a picture as soon as I can figure out how to get it on network54. The breeder looked at her a few weeks ago and didn't seem concerned about it at all--just told me to make sure I chose a stud with a good, straight jaw. I didn't ask her outright if any of the other dogs in her lineage had similar issues, but I think (hope) that she would have told me if that was the case. I have her 3 generation pedigree, so maybe I should do some investigating. Her jaw is perfectly upswept, she has a nice big head and a flat profile. When you view her from the top of her head you can see her lower lip is off center, though. I know I'm looking at her through "Mommy eyes", but she looks perfect to me other than that. I will post a new message when I can send a picture. Thanks!

Wait till she matures to see

Sometimes it will get worse, or she can be going thru a growth spell and it might somewhat straighten out. Don't let her chew on hard bones and such as it can make it worse. Then when she is mature, you can evaluate her other qualities, too.

One would be surprised at how many of the champion dogs, dogs doing big winning, might have a tipped or "off" jaw.

My thoughts would be, how are her parents, siblings, etc.? Do they have good jaws? Can you post a picture for us to see?

Wry Jaw Pictures

I have pictures on our website from a number of years ago of one of our dogs with a wry jaw so that people can see what one looks like. The URL is http://theblueposts.org/wry Hope it helps you understand what a true wry jaw looks like.

Re: If she were mine I would not breed her

What do you mean by "Now there is a difference between a wry jaw and what you are seeing?". I also wasn't aware that one fault meant she couldn't be shown--it was my impression that EVERY dog has some kind of fault.
