Crate training... HELP
Submitted by Cape33 on April 21, 2010 - 12:36amHi all, Sumo is about 6months now. I have started crate training him from about 2.5 months now. It took about 2 weeks but he was pretty much 95% crate trained until the past week or two? It's so strange, he was doing so well, would go in every night by himself and rarely have any accidents. I'm not sure what happened but recently he will constantly bark if in his crate and now will pee and defecate in his crate?! It's not like we leave him in there for long either, it's literally about 5 min in his crate and we will find either pee or feces. Also, he has NEVER defecated in his crate before, even the first days of crate training? It's like he almost thinks the crate is his pee pads now? HELP?!

have you brought him to the vet? there may be an underlying issue. Often cats and dogs will go to the bathroom in outrageous places, or right in front of you, when there is an infection or something along those lines. Any time my cat would have a UTI he would come right in front of me and pee all over the floor.
He also may be reaching the adolescent stage in his life, where he'll be much more challenging in general, challenging you for his role in the pack etc

do you make sure to take him out even for a short walk before he goes in the crate? and make sure he pees and poops before you put him in at all?

Is the crate too big? It needs to be just big enough so that he can stand comfortably, turn around and lay down and stretch out. If it is too big, he can defecate on one side and sit on the other without sitting in his own mess.

Hi, yes I do. Well not right before but within 10-15 mins. The thing is, He was pretty much crate trained but it's like a relapse, but worse as he never defecated in his crate when first being trained.
