I have one more question, hope someone out there can help..
I cannnot sem to "crate train" my puppy, . he would much rather roam around and sleep under my bed, on top of my bed, or where ever he sees fit. What shall i do? I would love for him to be crate trained, I am trying, and using positive reinforcement, but , he does not want to remain in his crate, I will put him in there when he falls to sleep, but, once he realizes where he is, its back up.. ugh!! help please! thanks, Nina
try this
my 6 mo old male didn't mind his crate but he would go to the bathroom in it always. not on the blanket he slept on he would push it aside and poop. so much for the crate. i decided to keep him in our computer room, its tile and i put pillows and a blanket on the floor and i gate the doorway and lay down wee wee pads for him to go poop on. it worked for me. we've had him 3 mos. and he loves HIS bedroom. he doesn't even want to wake up to go out in the morning. in the night if he must go to the potty he uses the wee wee pads. during the day i only leave 1 pad down in case of emergency otherwise he goes out my doggie door to the yard and does his potty stuff. hope this helps.
Crate Training
Nina, it's tough, but totally worth it in the long run. We started crate-training Bambino at 12 weeks, and now he's eight months. About a month ago, I started a new job, and that had me gone from home a lot more, with no one to check in on him and let him out. He was in his crate for long periods, until we got a baby gate and gave him free roam of a small area. Well, he began to dread and hate his crate from that little time, and we couldn't get him back in it at night. He'd pace around our bedroom, could never get comfortable, and little by little, we've re-introduced the crate at night (only at night... when we're gone during the day, he's in the baby gate area), and we moved the crate upstairs near our bed. On top of the crate is a squirt bottle and coffee can filled with coins... both of which he hates. So, when he growls, he gets *the can* or *the gun*, and he learns that it's time for bed.
He's been back in the crate for a week, and things are going wonderfully. He's sleeping through the night now, and doing really well -- he loves his crate again. It's just taken lots of time, patience, and no giving in. Little by little, we inch the crate away from our bed, until it will be downstairs again -- it will take some time, but we're so happy things are going well.
Get yourself a coffee can and a squirt bottle... or something else to show that you mean business. And, put a couple of comforting items in the crate, too... it makes a world of difference.
Good luck!!
