Kacee has a sore on her leg, immediately lower than the knee joint. When it first started it looked like a fire ant bite. We have so many fire ants in Texas it should be our state insect. Anyway, Kacee won't leave it alone and she keeps chewing at it. She doesn't mind me looking at it, doesn't seem like it bothers her except for her chewing at it. We put antibiotics on it and she licks it off.
I am now wondering if it could be ringworm instead of a fire ant bite. It looks open and raw and is a circle. I remember ringworm from when I was a kid but don't remember much about it and can't use the search option to look up ringworm. It would help me to see a picture of ringworm. At her last vet visit 2 weeks ago, it didn't look like much of anything so the vet wasn't too concerned about it. I am posting a picture of the sore.
Re: Re: sore
The picture is blurry because I cropped and zoomed on it so much. It actually doesn't look half that bad. It is not oozy or runny. The spot is dry and brownish looking to the naked eye, looks more like a scab on it. There is only the one spot. It really looked like a fire ant bite until Kacee started chewing on it. I have an Elizabethan collar, just hate to use it but will if she doesn't leave it alone. When the vet saw it he wasn't too concerned, it looked like fire ant bite to him too.
Re: sore
Using an Elizabethan collar is most likely the most sure fire way to keep her away from sore....fuzzy photo but looks infected...what does vet say??? If she isn't able to get at sore at least you can get a better idea of what you are looking at...the vet has easy way to tell...are there any other similar spots on her even if they are smaller???
Good Luck...you can get the collars at PetSmart stores...I got one at their warehouse store.
sore
The sore looks deep to me, although the picture is a bit blurry. Is is deep or is it superficial like a sunburn? Ringworm would be more superficial although roundish and itch. Clotrimazole cream (over the counter) or nizoral cream or other antifungals are used to treat it. Lamisil is new and I don't know about dogs using it. Clotrimazole is cheap and otc to try. But if its deep, it's not ringworm unless she's chewed it a lot. Does the dog stay out much? I once had a cat that had a fly lay eggs and when they hatched it created a deep hole on the top of his head. It is called a "worf" or something and it took forever to heal. I guess my thought is if it is deep, go back to the vet. At least you can get coban which is the stuff the vets seem to use to make bandages for animals. It is a bit sticky, a bit elastic and easily replaceable, but sturdy. You could also get a collar to prevent chewing on it.
Re: Link to ringworm picture/cures
I have been online looking for pictures of ringworm and from what I have found, didn't think Kacee's sore looked like ringworm.
I thought about spraying the sore with bitter apple but didn't know if it would burn or what. Actually, Kacee isn't too bothered by bitter apple anyway. It works for my Yorkie, but Kacee would eat or lick anything.
Thanks guys, we will keep the Neosporin flowing!
Bitter Apple
Hi,
Try glopping it with Neosporin & then spray the area with Bitter Apple. That should stop her from chewing at it. Most dogs think that stuff is NASTY. It's specifically used as a chewing deterent.

I don't know much about this. I thought this link might help you though.

Re: Sore
We tried Neosporin and she chews off any bandage we put on. She is one hardheaded little girl. I keep thinking IF it were ringworm, it would have spread and it hasn't.
Sore
Have you tried Neosporin on it to try and heal it? Being it is on her leg you could also put a gauze pad on it and wrap it up with wide adhesive like the vet does when they take blood. This would stop her some from chewing on it.
