Constipated Baby

I have a 2 week old orphaned pup... yes we are the people who lost our momma dog and 4 of her babies at birth... we have been feeding him Esbilac (not the goats milk kind) (that is what Petsmart here carries)and it seems to have constipated him. Is there a trick for this? His little booty is all puffed out when he strains... he pees just fine... but no poo... it has been about 12 hours since his last poo.

POOP

You can also get infant suppositories or take a thermometer and put a lot of vaseline on it and gently insert it into his rectum no more than 1 inch. I usually use the infant suppositories if I need to as they bend slightly and are soft when warmed by the puppies rectum

Re: Constipated Baby

Hi, I have had to raise a few kittens from the age of 3 days. Some people like to rub the baby's bellies with a warm wet cotton ball to stimulate them to go, but what I found to be most affective for me, was to run a gentle stream of warm water (careful not too hot)on their little bellies, while I rubbed their belly and under areas gently with my finger. This worked well, because it was easier to keep them clean and it worked very quickly. You just have to be sure that you get the baby COMPLETELY dry and warm before you put them back in their box. I hope you get your baby to poop soon and all goes well with him. Good luck!

Re: Constipated Baby

I'm sure you realize you need to stimulate them, rubbing with a kleenex their bottom area to stimulate them. They can't do this on their own, and that is what happens when "momma" cleans them.

However, if they are really constipated, with a small syringe (of course, without the needle), give a little soapy water enema.

Also, hold him under the faucet in the sink, have the water warm, but not hot, put a drop of soap on his butt, and let the water run on his back half, really rubbing and massaging him. This will sometimes really do it and you'll get the poop going good. Be sure to dry him real good so he doesn't get chilled after.

Are you giving him anything else besides the straight formula? Also, keep in mind, they don't poop as often as they pee. Basically they should pee every time you feed them, but they might only poop a couple times a day, not every feeding.
