Hey all. I'm new here and was hoping you all could help as you seem a nice bunch. My Jackson is almost two now and still quite a chewer and licker on wood furniture and molding (and door frames). Other than spraying it with bitter apple and the like what can I do? I have to keep him crated during the day while I work but I come home at lunch to walk him. He also will chew and lick the wood while I'm home -- so it's not just a separation thing -- I think he likes the taste. It drives me and my husband nuts because we're always worried he'll hurt himself and ruin our stuff.
He already has some toys and boys to keep him occupied. But is there anything special I should buy him to hold his attention? Anything else we can do? We already try to catch and correct him when this happens - but that doesn't seem to help long term. Other than this he is a great dog.
This is a tough one
My bully has also made some holes in my walls, but she suffers from separation anxiety and only does them while i'm gone for longer then usual. I would either keep him on a leash while you're at home to be able catch him every time or I would get a play pen for him to stay in when you can't keep an eye on him. It's bigger then a crate so he'll have more room. If you catch him chewing on something he's not supposed to, spray him with some water or shake a soda can (with some pennies inside). Also make sure to praise him everytime you see him chewing on his toys. Hope this helps!

Distraction
We use to give our bully a toy that is sold at Petsmart. I can remember the name but it is a square cube. You twist it one way and fill it with kibble or small treats. Then you twist it the other way to make the opening smaller. ( You can vary the size of the opening; either easy to difficult) then place it on the floor. As they kick it around the kibbles fall out. So they can play with it for awhile and treats still come out slowly. Its worth a try.
website for kong
They have realy cool recipies for the inside:

Kong did have some suggestions
I can't remember them [bad memory] but they said to you may have to keep getting harder the more the dog figures it out to keep their interest. I don't know if you can find Kong on the net or maybe some one else here might remember more.
Hmmm But
Good idea -- but then he sometimes gets tired of trying and gives up -- would rather chew on the wood or something easier! Any thoughts on REALLY tasty things I could put in the Kong that might hold his interest and provide more of a challenge?
You may need something more challenging for him.
Something he can't just lick out. Kibbles or biscuits in it.
I do
Every day I give Jackson some peanut butter in a Kong. He voraciously licks at it for 15 minutes or so until all of the pb he can easily reach is gone and then gives up -- isnt' much of one for chewing on rubber.
Sounds like boredom
Try to put some peanut butter in a kong toy for him to work on. Or if you have a tire biter put some in there.
they also have round ones like this
i saw them recently at Pet Supermarket.
