So Gracie developed a cherry eye last Wednesday that resolved itself, then again Thursday and it again resolved itself, then Friday, and she's still got it today. Rene took her to the vet on Saturday, and we're trying an anti-inflammatory ointment in conjunction with an oral antihistamine. It doesn't seem to be helping after 3 days, and the vet said she would refer us to an opthamologist for surgical correction. The thing is, it sounded like she said the current "state-of-the-art" is removal and replacement of the gland. This doesn't sound right to me. From reading on the internet, it sounds like tacking in place is the current best fix.
So my questions, for owners of other bulldogs that have had a cherry eye or two, are: How did you get it corrected? Did the fix work (i.e. prevent both recurrences and "dry eye")? And approximately how much did it cost?
Thanks,
Dave

My Bulldog Murphy is going through the eye deal right now i have brought him to two diffrent vets and they both told me he needs the eye surgery, but none of them could stain his eyes to see what really was going on. I noticed him closing his eyes a lot and sometimes walking into things, but ever since we gave him the treatments: pills and eye drops he seems to be doing a lot better. his eyes are wide open now and he dosent blink like he was doing before he also isnt getting all that gunk in them..my question to you is i have an appointment on thursday for the surgery and its killing me to have to do that to him in other words i dont think i can do it to him, ddo you think i sould get a 3ed opinion? please le me know soon all answers help.......im lost at this decision. thanks

Cherry eye
Hi David,
I had a bulldog with cherry eye. It would pop out when he rubbed his face on my furniture or if he played to hard. Luckily I could roll it back down and it would stay down for quite a while, days or months. Luckily he did not require surgery.
Place your finger along the lower eyelid just below the cherry. Gently roll your finger inward toward the eye gently pushing the cherry down back under the lid. It might stay & then it might not.
Most of the bulldog breeder/exhibitors I talk with would opt to have the gland snipped out and that's it. This does not require general anesthesia and in most cases did not cause dry eye.
dante had 2 surgeries...
The first time he had the tuck on both eyes... it lasted less than a week.... The second one he had a partial removal in both eyes. He still makes plenty of tears and has done great since... Had I known it would work out like that I would have not put him through the first surgery (which had more recovery to it). Please feel free to email me with other questions! -ann
