Can we catch a break?!?! Now she has crystals...

Just as Mocha's other issues are almost gone she now has crystals in her urine. Took a urine sample in this morning because Mocha was having accidents in the house, urine had a funky smell and she was squatting more than usual with little to nothing coming out. He said she has a "whopping" amount of crystals in her urine, "struvite crystals" and put her on Ciprofloxacin 250mg antibiotic and Hills Prescription Diet S/D.

Poor girl has been moaning a little bit. I can imagine they are painful. Does anyone have experience with crystals? Any additional info that can help her would be appreciated! Do you know if the antibiotic and special food he gave her are highly effective??

Thanks!

Yeah, must be from the

infection that she's whining but she whines alot for attention too! She definitely knows how to get me to hug and kiss on her. What can I say... she's got me wrapped around her little pinky! wink.gif

Well the vet said they won't know if she has stones unless we take xrays but he wanted her on the antibiotics and special food first then we will take it from there after meds are completed in 10 days.

agree. Belle seems to have no pain from crystals..

I've never had a dog whine or cry. Even when Junior had his prolapse surgery, he was just quiet and slept alot. It's worse than little kids because you can't explain. Prayers for those antibiotics to kick in soon!

She just has the crystals right, no stones?

I don't think the crystals cause any pain (until they become stones). She just probably feels really crappy because of the UTI. In a day or two the antibiotics will help. She'll feel better soon!

And I've had kidney stones too. They HURT!!

aww so sorry..

Could you ask the vet for something for the pain? I had kidney stones and it's horrible awful. Pain meds really helped until they could be removed.

I know and

yes she is eating the soft food... I was told they no longer make the kibble form of the S/D.
I was home from work today and it has been breaking my heart to hear her whining today. I feel bad but being a mommy of a such a precious bully is all worth it in the end! happy.gif

I believe...

The c/d is for gastro-intestinal issues, and the s/d is for bladder issues.

Stella LOVED the soft food - she thought I'd gone mad giving her a "treat" with every meal.

Thanks Joan,

good idea to add water to the kibble. Hadn't thought of that. My vet did tell me to try to get her to drink more water. I thought she already drank a lot, but more can't hurt.

I'll also ask about combining what you give with what Belle already gets- Rymadol, Tramadol, and whatever the new pill is that is coming in the mail.

Sheesh, this dog takes more meds than my 86 year old mother! Thankfully, she seems to feel fine.

Part of being a bully mom

Unfortunately, is having infinite patience for "things that come up". The thing with a UTi is that the antibiotics will kick in pretty quickly and she'll feel herself soon. And remember, crystals don't mean stones so don't panic about surgery. You're taking preventive measures so she should be good!

Are you feeding her the soft of hard prescription food. My vet had suggested the soft (as gross as it was) because it gave additional moisure. Stella is not a big drinker.

Mochas Mommy Vickie's picture

Thanks... I just feel

exhausted since there is always something lately and I try SO hard to do everything RIGHT and take so many preventative measures in hope that she won't get stuff but it's INEVITABLE!!!

Answers - and a question

Stella had chronic bladder infections for the first half of her life. We always treated with antibiotics and eventually the s/d food (the soft one for added moisture - and added stinkiness). Always took care of it, but it always came back. She usually had crystals but not always.

Eventually, she got switched to the Royal Canine SD food, which specializes in bladder issues. We haven't had a problem since!

If Mocha's condition persists, I would talk to you vet about the Royal Canine food.

Hang in there, mom. You are doing SUCH a good job with her!

Elaine, the dosage is

500 mg C-Ester
The Cranberry pills are called 'Triple Strength' with 100 mg Vit C and 3 iu Vitamin E and 420 mg Cranberry Concentrate.
I add quite a bit of water to the dry kibble to make sure she gets additional fluids.
She also gets a pet vitamin, glucsamine and chondroitin with MSM, plus fish oil.
She has only eaten C/D, with hardly any table food for six years.
Joan

how much "c" and "cranberry" pills?

sounds like the same plan of attack..

Belle was on the c/d and Cephalexin for two weeks. Bacteria cleared up, but she still had crystals. When her pee dried on the cement it looked like dried milk with fine sparkly glitter in it.

Vet told me Belle may still develop stones. She said she had just removed a bunch of stones from a dog who a few months earlier had an xray that showed nothing. I sure hope we don't go that route.

the food will encourage her to drink more too...

and that is what she needs as well
sometimes the uniary dogfood comes in moist
that is what I did with the pug to try to get as much fluid into Tammy as I could..
I just used the moist..
mind it is more expensive
but she needed more fluids so that is what I did

My pug that i had was not very active..
she was terrible for holding her bladder as long as she could..
if it rained she hated going out and such
I would say that she held her bladder more herself then I for not putting her out..
if that makes sense.

I was on the hour or two and out the door lots in the beginning
really try to get her to drink as much as possible
that really helps alot
I even added no salt chicken broth to Tammy's water to help her out too
she never needed the surgery
but sounds like she should have stayed on the same dog food likely forever.
Mocha will drink more on her own too..with the new food

Holly had stones and after they were removed, she was put

on C/D. She's been on it for 6 years and no reoccurance. In addition I give her Vit C and Cranberry pills. BTW, Holly is 11.

No, Mocha has been on Natural Balance

fish and potato for the past 3 weeks. I just switched.
For now though she can only eat the S/D prescription food and then I have to take her back in after 10 days when the antibiotics are done. From there, we'll see....
I'm glad Belle doesn't have stones! I'm hoping the same goes for Mocha.

Thanks... I really don't get how

she got this!
That site mentions if they "hold it" too long which she does not... I take her out pretty often. Now that she has crystals I'm taking her out even more, about every hour and a half just to try and help her from being in more pain than she already is.
It also mentions lack of exercise.... she goes out everyday for either 2 walks a day or a good 25 minute play/run around time. I'm very consistent with that.
I just switched her to Natural Balance fish and potato 3 weeks ago. Which I thought was supposed to be a very good food. Don't know if this has anything to do with it. I asked the vet but his response was real general like "who knows, it can be many different factors"). So I don't know. I just hope she doesn't have stones and these antibiotics and food clears it up and no surgery. Hoping and praying for good results!
Thanks

Belle does too...

Sorry to hear that. Hope she feels better soon.

I didn't know there was any problem until Belle had a Senior check up and crystals were found in her urine. She has minor incontinence issues from a spine problem, so I didn't notice anything unusual. She was put on Hill's c/d for two weeks and then another urine check was done. Still had crystals. Took xray. No stones found. (glad for that!) The vet told me the c/d was the milder version of the food. She said s/d was more for dissolving stones that have already formed.

Unfortunately, Belle's ears immediately flared up on the c/d. She was almost facing ablation surgery last year when I tried to change her food, so when her ears started to flair up, the vet decided we should put her back on her Canidae Lamb and Rice and give medication 3 times a day. I don't know what med it is yet. It's coming in the mail.

What food is Mocha on? Wouldn't it be strange if they were both eating Canidae!

What is the normal PH level?

Where should it be?
Also they advised me not to give anything other than the S/D food for now until it clears up. Do you think that includes supplements or maybe referring to treats and such???

this is a great link to give you some ideas...awesome site..

I had this with a pug....

it is really hard to get under control
but the food is great..I used medical uniary for my pug
then she was on antibiotics as well
the biggest thing we could do for her was to get out as often as possible.
I remember getting up with her many times during the night
she got better in time..
but took time..for sure
I could see blood in her urine..that is how I seen it. she was also having accidents in the house too.
talking months before she was back to her old self..

wander if a cranberry supplement might help too
I gave one to Tammy my pug..but not sure what the dosage was
she went to my husbands house with the seperation..long story. he stole her on xmas day..but..
apparently she has them back again now..
YOU might need to leave her on that food for the very LONG term
what my did was take her off food and they came back

does she go back for a recheck at the vets again
the antibiotics will help her too..

judy wilson's picture

i would go high....

amounts of vit c...1000mg once a day for two weeks and then go to twice a day....changes the ph in the urine so stones cannot develope...i would also buy some urine stirps (any pharmacy)and check the ph level yourself....my friend has had excellant luck with her pug....

S/D, later C/D worked for Lucky

My old boy was diagnosed for struvite crystals when he was about 3 years old.
He was placed on Hills Prescription Diet S/D first for six weeks and after a check of the urine on C/D.

It is important not to interfere with the S/D diet because it should desolve the stones.
After Lucky was placed on the C/D we had a diet advice from a holistic vet. She adviced us to stick to the C/D as homemade couldn't be better, but she told us to add vedgetables and fruit to the food, or given as treats. Vit. C was added to his food, to help keep the urine ok.

Lucky did well on the food, with a little greasy skin. He was trained in obedience and competed with nice results, trained on apple! Once a week he was allowed a piece of raw haring. He lived up to almost nine years, and didn't have any problems with the crystals.

The food is fairly expensive, but it beats having an operation!

Good luck,

Ineke
