bulldogs and pools...

What are the facts regarding bulldogs and swimming pools? We are building a pool this summer and we are concerned about dunkie (our 8 month old english bulldog) getting hurt.

Any advice??

OMG, that's so sad... so so sorry to hear that! ): n/m

Betty, Buddy and Mighty Dog

I'm so sorry.

That's so very sad, I am very sorry for your loss.

Oh, I'm so sorry

How terrible, I'm so sorry for your loss

So sorry, Sam.

I am sure you were upset. These guys are like kids in you never know what they will do.

Definitely make sure they cannot get to the pool unless you are around. I had a friend who owned two Springer Spaniels. Those dogs can swim like fish, but when they were in the pool they could not figure out how to go to the steps to get out. We spent two days teaching them. Also had another friend that had a St. Bernard puppy. Poor thing fell into the pool and couldn't figure out how to get out and drowned. Make your pool child proof and your dog will be OK

please be extremely careful..I lost a Ch. male a couple of months ago(he hated the pool). He pushed under the cover and drowned.I will never let mine out around the pool again,it can happen so fast.

Lifejacket, fence and supervision

Bulldogs cannot generally swim reliably like a lab. They sink and drown as they are heavy. If your family is swimming, you can put a lifejacket on so he can be around the pool with you. Even then, I would only leave him around the pool with supervision. The rest of the time fencing him out or keeping him in the house is the best plan.

There is one bullie on here that swims, but he is very unusual and his owner supervises him carefully. We have heard of many more bullies that have accidently drowned. The odds are not good.

Ask about lifejackets and you will find some nice suggestions.
