Bubba's limping really bad....advice please.

About an hour ago Bubba started limping really bad. It's the worse I've ever seen him limp. I have no idea what happened but he had to go potty and could barely walk. I live in an apartment building and there are some steps. He had a hard time. I don't know if I need to take him to a 24 hour ER clinic or what to do. This has never happened b/f. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

how about putting kid tube socks on him to go out..

Easy to slip on when you walk out the door and off when you come back in. I know snow is salted in some areas. Maybe it burns his feet.

You can buy a 10 or 12 pack of tube kid (not baby) tube socks for just a few dollars. I get them at Target. They fit over the paw and up the leg because they don't have a heel. They don't stay on well, but they may work long enough to go out to pee. They distract Teddy from licking his feet. By the time they fall off he has forgotten his feet were bugging him.

Hope he is feeling better today!

4 on the floor...I"d never heard that b/f.

Thanks Elaine. Last night he went potty in the middle of the night and seemed a little better. Well, his right front paw got into a little snow and he freaked out. Needless to say, he limped terribly on the way back in. Now I"m wondering if it might be his paw. I tried to touch his leg and he kind of freaked out. He's resting so hopefully will get better.

use a belt or harness or large towel to help him..

on the stairs, use something to help ease the weight. It could be caused by something as simple as a slip on the floor.

A few weeks ago Bentley wouldn't put any weight on his rear leg after he ran in from outside. Three days of crate rest and potty outside on a leash so he couldn't run, and he was back to normal.

I wouldn't go to an emergency vet. I'd crate rest him for a few days before going to the vet. No jumping up on the sofa or bed. 4 on the floor!

Motin/Ibuprofin will kill him.

Never give anything but an aspirin unless directed to by your vet. My daughter's Shep died last summer after ingesting Motrin.

Why no motrin/ibuprofen? I hadn't heard that. I have some

old pain meds from when he pulled a muscle 2 years ago but it says they expired after 1 year.

Thanks, he does have to go down stairs to pee.

I have one of the synthetic patches of grass but he doesn't use it. He knows he is supposed to pee outside and will struggle to walk the hall, go down the elevator, down 10 stairs, outside, and pee. There is no way I can carry him. He's 75lbs and I have an extremely bad back. I think rest is what he really needs, I just hope he doesn't hurt it worse.

PS> if he must do stairs to go out to pee,

see if you can get him to go on many layers of newspaper! Tomorrow's Sunday Edition should be just the thing for this. happy.gif

Immediate response is rest, rest and more rest.

Hopefully its a pulled muscle and a few days, even a couple weeks or no walks, no stairs, and only going out to potty and then back inside, will help this limp repair itself. You can choose to give him one adult aspirin tonight if you wish...and its gotta be aspirin, preferably coated variety. NO aspirin-substitutes, no ibuprofen, nothing except aspirin (don't cannot process these other drugs).
