I am so sorry to keep everyone in suspense. I should have emailed Amy or Elaine from my BBerry, but my mind just hasn't been screwed on properly lately.
I spent the day at the vet and then had to go straight to work at 3pm and dropped Betty off with Mom. I got home from work late and slept until after 9am, very unlike me, but I guess I'm just emotionally exausted.
Here's a video of Betty from when I posted yesterday, with her bone. This is why I went straight to the vet. She is normally aggressive with her chewing and possesive, I could just reach and pick it up. Not right.
That's her bone in front of her face:

At the vet, I gave her a biscuit for getting on the scale and she winced in pain, squinted her eye, and head tilted when she took it. Like she did earlier with the cheese. She would freak when the vet tried to open her mouth to look in. He pressed on her jaws and face and would never get a response, so it doesn't appear to be a tooth or bone issue. We took head and chest xrays and they looked clear. So, he is suspecting MMM - masticatory muscle myositis. It's an auto-immune problem where her own immune system attacks the muscles that open the mouth. Later they cannot open it at all. A blood test can confirm it, so we drew blood next. It took forever and several techs to get blood. Poor Betty has bad veins and even when they'd get one, it was a trickle. Here she is:
So, she is on tramadol for pain and an antibiotic. I am waiting for the blood test result this morning to confirm or rule out MMM. If it's not that, then we would need to sedate her to get her mouth open for a better look, maybe a tissue biopsy of the muscle (as the blood test can be a false negative sometimes).
She does still have her appetite, thank goodness. Behavior is normal, I think she's dealing with the discomfort mostly and grieving Raven.
Thank you for the concern and prayers. I must say that yesterday was tough at first as I didn't want to be at the vet's without Raven so soon, just was so difficult since he and I spent so much time there. But I was worried enough for Betty to keep my mind off things... I hope my little snuggle-bug will feel better soon.

we had a similar situation with farcus, he wouldn't take his nig
milkbone.... and he NEVER passes one up. we immediately took him to the er and at first they couldn't find anything wrong. then they realized it was a tooth that had become infected. but he was the same way, you could not open his mouth or he would freak out... i hope the test is negative and it ends up being something simple!

Maybull had MMM
The vet gave her steriods and some pain meds and within a day, she was getting back to normal. She was on steriods for several weeks during which he was very hungry and drank a lot of water. That was last year and she had not had a re-occurance, possibly because she was on the meds for a long time. I think it's probably good news if it's just MMM. Hope you and she are better very soon.
Whew!
I am SO glad to hear from you guys. I was just about to e-mail you at home - I was giving you one more hour
If I'm not mistaken, Deb's Gracie had MMM a year or so ago (I recall she couldn't play with her jolly ball). If that's it, sounds like it is totally treatable.
Please give Betty a hug from me and Stella (and take one for yourself too)
Good to hear from you Dawn
may the blessings be and that you find strength in the love that is always there, the ocean of love and mercy. Good vibes and warm light. tamsen
Dawn, thank you for the update.
I will be praying for Sweet Miss Betty. Is MMM a fast onset? I thought it was a slow onset with pain and indicators? Has Betty had pain in opening and/or chewing in the past? I am really only wondering, not doubting:-) I have a jaw problem myself that has taken years to come about, but it has been painful the whole time. Eventually I will have to have surgery to relieve it.
Anyway, prayers for Betty...and for you my dear friend. I am so sorry all this has happened to you...with your cougar, then Raven, now Miss Betty Cute Face.
On a lighter note. How is that Mustang boy of yours doing? What about your new cow? Any new news? I would love to hear it:-)

I feel so badly about all of this.......
just when you need time to grieve, you have something else to deal with....

I wish I could help in some way other than prayers.
Kisses for Betty and (((((hugs)))))) for you!
At least it's treatable
Deb's Sugar had myosotis and I believe it's treated with prednisone. I hope there is nothing else going on. Hugs to you and prayers to Betty.

Thanks for the update
you 2 ladies were sure on my mind! I'm glad she's eating - that's really good! I'll be keeping good thoughts that it's not anything serious and will keep looking for more updates. (((Hugs)))
