Gretta is the Alpha in our house (with our GSD..not us). Jenna (GSD) has no problem with it. Just trying to figure out Gretta's behavior when interacting w/other dogs.
She was attacked by a Lab about 1 1/2 months ago and started acting nervous around other dogs..on walks when she saw or heard another dog she would get anxious..all the fur on her shoulderblades and back would stand up and she would start "talking"..whining and growling..but as soon as she meets these dogs up close she is a sweetie..but very submissive.
At BullyFest she did fine with other dogs..was not nervous at all..not dominant and not really submissive either..but on our walk tonight she met a male GSD...and rolled on her back and urinated . Is she showing the other dog how submissive she is? And how can I stop the urinating? That is the first time she has done that.
When we walked away from the GSD Gretta started acting tough...growling and high stepping...looking over shoulder and huffing and puffing.
I don't want to baby her too much ...in other words by reassuring her that eveything is ok am I reinforcing the behavior? Or should I just ignore it?
I appreciate any input on this
Gretta
Kim,
Great question!
You are right, her rolling and urinating are submissive. She is trying to tell the other dog that everything is O.K.-no need to get rattled. Do not coddle her when she does this. When she is approaching another dog, stay calm, act like nothing is happening, talk in normal tones etc. Babying her is reinforcing the behavior, when she is standing, reinforce it with praise and a treat. Her submissive/timid behavior is not necessarily bad behavior but you don't want her to think she needs to be afraid of other dogs.
Good luck and be careful
