well, Stella was having some issues for over a week now, and I posted to the med board and got some great advice. But her goopy eyes, itchiness and spots weren't seeming to clear up. And then my DH noticed she seemed to be favouring her left hind leg a little so I called the vet last night and got in for an appt. this morning.
Well, as one of you guessed the spots are staph, so she has some antibiotics(cephalexin)to take for 2 weeks.
The vet was pushing her food on me, and I was basically just nodding and smiling..
but then with Stella's leg, because she is so muscley she couldn't really get a good feel, so they did an Xray.
Well, this vet is our shots and check ups vet, not our bully vet.
So she said the x rays show that Stella has advanced arthritis in both hind legs at the hips and knees.
She also said the joints are off and not good ball and socket joints - I looked at her and said - you know Bulldogs don't have typical ball and socket joints, right?!
she seemed like she was giving it her best guess...
anyway, I called my bully vet when I got home and asked if we could email her the x rays for a second opinion, and she said she would look at them.
Anyway, all this to say, I feel like the worst mom in the world! I feel like I have failed my dog. She's only been with us since October and she already has a staph infection and goopy eyes!
I feel like I don't deserve to have such an awesome dog, and like I don't know enough to take care of her...
I just love her so much and I don't want her to be in any discomfort.
Tiffany and Stella
Tiffany, you have to remember...
we are talking BULLDOGS here...they are a breed unto themselves! Stella is a doll and you are a sweetie for all you are doing for her. Things will turn around and you will laugh about it! I know that may be hard to believe, but it is true.

Things go in cycles. I bet her hips and legs are just fine, let us know what YOUR regular Bulldog vet has to say. the staph will clear up. Try to be kind to yourself, you are a great Bullymomma!
Much love and many hugs to you both!

Whew!
I don't think you're a bad Mom - and not just because my Q went through a bout of staph, or that I didn't know Kano had advanced arthritis! LOL

Dogs don't show pain and discomfort they way we do (especially me - I'm such a baby). It's a survival thingee. Good that you're having the Xrays checked by a bulldog vet. If confirmed, there are lots of thing you can do to make her more comfy! I'm looking into aqua therapy and cold laser treatments for Kano (she's already on joint supplement).

Not a bad mom... I mean come on look at the princess picture ;)

Thanks Amy :)
I will definitely want to know everything there is to know about it, and what I can do for her.

It sounds to me like you are an AWESOME bully mom:-)
You are doing all you can to see to her comfort and well being. Gosh, that sounds like a great life for her to me!!!
As for teh hips and knees...join the crowd. You won't have a hard time getting advice from those of us with hip and knee issues in bullies...there are lots of us out here! I have Sophia on 1000mg plain Glucosamine daily. It has helped her tremendously. I buy Wal-Mart or Target...just plain ol glucosamine capsules. I put one in a meal with a tablespoon of plain, fat free yogurt. Sophie doesn't even notice a pill in there:-)

Don't be silly, Silly!
I'd go crazy if I thought that way about my Stella. In the last year alone, she has lost both of her eyes, had a major staph infection, crusty ears and a huge gastro-intestinal "issue". Yikes!
You are doing a great job with her. With bulldogs, things inevitably come up, usually for no apparent reason.
And, heck, she loves you, mom!!
thanks
I just want her to be healthy and happy.

Not your fault
Tiffany, don't feel that way. Staph issues just come up (for most of us at times) and you didn't give the dog arthritis. Some things just happen and some can be hereditary. Hope she feels better.

Awww...sorry for all of Stella's problems...
But you're a very good Mom taking good care of your girl. I hope you get the answers you need soon & I hope Stella will be on the mend quickly. We're dealing with eye problems with Dolly too & it is frustrating. I want her to be well NOW! Best Wishes.
