Arthur's hives...topsoil ingredients??? :(

Picked up some Benedryl this am, he's not trying to scratch, hives seem to be decreasing. He's not having
problems breathing at all, no watery eyes or runny nose. He's had hives 3 times, after being bee stung, and twice after being around bagged topsoil when we've done planting around the deck, patio. (2 separate plantings.) He's not had hives any other time either
at home or here at the in-laws.
Any ideas of possible culprits in the topsoil? He did get to walk around in it, and a couple of rolls.

great :)

Glad to hear he has gotten some relief.

I forgot to mention in my above post that you can also use an over the counter hydro-cortisone cream as well as the other things.

Sorry your so itchy little buddy..hope you get better soon!!n/m

Arthur update..... : )

After the doses of Benedryl, three cool baths, (one with epsom salts, his hives are decreasing very well, he's not scratching at all. The spot on his shoulder has even gone down to barely noticeable. Very glad he didn't scratch anything to an open sore!!
He's had a short walk on his show lead, supper and a small piece of cheesecake for all he's been through.
Looks like he bit the bullet on the cortisone shot.

Thank you all for your care, advice and thoughts!!

Sure

Don't know why not. I have never used that but a topical anti itch lotion/cream, regardless of what brand, should help relieve the itch.

When Sumo had a severe case of ringworm I applied the Calamine to the bad areas with a cotton ball and it stopped him from scratching without any adverse reaction.

Hope he's feeling better soon. Poor fella.

itchies...

Thanks for ifo on epsom salts and calamine lotion.
Do you think that clear calahist lotion would work too?
My wife and I were wondering if lotions could be applied.

Thanks so much!

Try this for the itchies

if Benadryl doesn't help relieve the itch, either stand him in the tub with some epsom salt in water and scoop up and pour over him or apply some calamine lotion to those spots.

Both these things have always helped when Sumo was itchy and irritated.

Arthur's status...

Hi Kathy, you've been such a help!
Had to give Arthur a cool bath just now, he's not scratching bad now, but spot on rt shoulder giving him probs. Will prob end up getting him to vet for cortisone shot. We've just pieced the topsoil idea together, and he's been on Frontline since we've had him. got him at 8 wks.

Take care, thanks so much again for your concern and help.

re Arthur's hives

It's pretty amazing what these guys can be allergic to. I don't know what's in topsoil that could do it, but Oscar kept breaking out in hives after the exterminator would spray every month. We had to discontinue the service and fight the creatures ourselves. He's allergic to Frontline. He breaks out if I use Tide detergent to wash the linens. I keep a good supply of benedryl on hand. Glad Arthur is doing better today.
