Are your Bulldog/s kenneled when you are out or free?

Just curious if most people kennel thier dog/s when they go out or not? If not kenneled what age did you start giving them more freedom? In the past with the weim and Vizsla it was around a 1 year before we stopped kenneling.
What peaked my curiousity was that New Years Eve we went out to friends for the evening. I watch my husband put Georgia in her kennel and lock it. Well Rosie our miss smarty pants weimaraner unlocked the kennel we are assuming. We have seen her try it before but never thought she would succeed both locks when we had our Vizsla. I never even thought of her trying it with the bulldog puppy. So, we were greeted at the door by our weimaraner, vizsla and one very happy butt wiggiling bulldog puppy.
She did no damage while she was out. The thing is I don't know how long she was out for! Anyways she was ok ha's all that matters. LOL

Just wondered how other bullies made out not kenneled?

Kenneled. Too many and different ages to leave out together safe

Min Pin unlocks his kennel so we have to put clamp on it, and I do believe he will figure that on out as well. He is a little houdini!!!

Here's Betty's "end table" kennel

I have to kennel her because she cannot be trusted with Raven and Cowboy cat unsupervised. SHe's such a bossy girl and they could get into a squabble. And she takes every opportunity to shove the cat across the room. She's probably a puppy mill bitch, so really does fine in her kennel, her little den.

Me too

In their cages. I like to know they are safe. One worry is fire, but we have an alarm. Does anyone have notification for fire dept of dogs in house? Wonder if ya could just drop in and make friends at the fire station?

kenneled

Billy roams the house. Has always ben good. he has a doggy door to go outside and pee.

free within baby gated rooms..

I don't leave all 5 together. Roxy always stays baby gated in my bedroom with her own door to outside. We leave Bent, Jr, and Belle out together. They all just sleep when we are gone. Teddy stays with Roxy or baby gated apart from the other three.

Older one.. No. Younger one.. Yes.

My older one is out on the couch, because she won't do anything. The younger one on the other hand is always in the crate when I leave. The reason is, I tried trusting her one night and she chewed a hole in my wall a little and one arm on the couch! UGH! So, I can't trust her yet. Maybe in another year or so when she's done teething and more mellowed out. I used to be against crates etc. but now I believe in them..

The younger one thinks of the crate as her den and even goes in there to sleep without the door shut, she also runs in there if there was a loud bang or thunderstorms. It's her sense of protection from the outside world I'd say.. Like most people explained to me while I was crate training, it's her house. When I go in there and clean it for her often, she gets so excited. She runs in there with her toys and back out. It's funny.

I think it's just maturity

I see her uncle Alvin every day and she is so much like him. I know he was very similar as a pup and between 2 1/2 - 3 years he finally settled down. She will be 3 in April so she's at the right age. Oh, I could show you pictures that would just have you in stiches.

She really is a sweet little girl. happy.gif

Have you every seen Alvin's Rally video? OMG - enjoy!

I never thought you'd stop crating her. LOL What changed in the last 2 months?

One of my favorite pics

Bailey has always had free roam as well as Porter when he was with me. Ellie has had a few issues but I'm happy to say she has been kennel free for approx 2 months - woohoo!!!

Do you see why she has to be kenneled? The girl knows how to party. happy.gif

Mine are out all the time...I put up the baby gate

so they stay out of the bedrooms. I think I started off with a couple hours at a time when they were about a year.

Free roam since he was 2

I started testing him at 2 just going outside for a minute and working it up to trips to the store etc.,

He's a perfect angel when we are NOT home. LOL It's when we're home and not paying attention to him that he gets in trouble.

Mine are baby-gated in my large bathroom

I came home too many times to vomit, pee or poop on the floor. In the bathroom they rarely mess and it's usually my fault for leaving them too long and it's much easier to clean tile, then carpet. I don't crate them because I think it's nice that they can sleep together and play if I'm not there. They also have a little bit of room to walk around. Kane has to be locked up because he marks, he is a rescue and I think because he wasn't neutered early he has to pee everywhere. He rarely does it when we are home, but the minute we leave him alone he will go and pee or poop somewhere.

definitely crated

the three of them are a tag team of trouble plus Stan is know to try and fight inanimate objects like tables and the things on tables so im worried he would bump one and have something fall on him

flbulldogmom's picture

Our adults are loose in the house

Twister stays in his puppy pen....but that's a baby-gated entrance way - so he's got quite a bit of room to roam - I don't imagine he'll be out loose for at least a year or more - we'll probably start with sleeping out of crate at night and go from there

Boo & Clovis are free, but I HAVE to kennel Flynn, she is very d

Flynn is the worst wood chewer I have ever had. She has destroyed my window sills, my faux wood blinds, the corners of my desks, corners of sofa cushions, etc. I keep hoping she will outgrow it so I can leave her free like the others.

Hurley is crated

anytime and everytime we are not at home. I previously was owned by the cutest sweetest pug, she was crated up until she was about 4 years old. At that time, we sectioned off an area in the house that she had access to and for the most part we had no problems. But one day she got very sick and unexpectedly passed away that night in my arms. To this day we still do not know what she got into but we won't take a chance with Hurley.

Stella has been free since 6 months

We never had any problem with her. We just had to hide the remote, portable phone and anything hard plastic while she was a pup.

at first Nacho was in the X-pen, now...

he is free in the downstairs "dog room". We have a room off of the garage that Daisi and Nacho share while we are at work. Works well minus the fact that the carpet it ruined lol

I don't need to keep her closed in. Thankfully, she is fully trustworthy! I only close the door to the bathroom because for some reason she loves the rug I have in there and likes to pee on it! Other than that she is very good. She is usually in 1 of 2 spots when I get home...her bed #1 or bed #2! happy.gif

Stella is crated

Both when we are out and at night.
If we are not with her she will potty in the house.
We tried giving her some freedom at first and we ended up with some messes in the house.
And if we don't crate her at night we will whine at our bedroom door, and my DH can't sleep with her snoring sad.gif or else I would have her in bed with me.

She loves the weekends because sometimes I will fall asleep watching TV on the couch with her, and she just stays snuggled up to me all night long.

That looks like the work of Maverick!

He now has blankets in his pen with no stuffing so he doesn't get the satisfaction of pulling it out!

We left him with a comforter at the kennel and when I picked him up he had made the whole kennel into a fluffy bed by removing so much stuffing (and they had cleaned it up only that morning... good work for a few hours!).

I'm glad to hear you can leave her now, there is hope then for Maverick!

B_Tracey's picture

Maverick is kenneled all day.

I wish it wasn't so, our Rottie is loose (which means he gets run of the main floor only). We tried Maverick loose for awhile at around 2 years (once we weren't worried about him getting run over by the Rottie, although it's generally the other way around), but unfortunately the monster-chewer starting getting into trouble after about a week. Coming home to a bulldog (not too mention a couch & carpet) covered in blue ink from him eating a pen was the end of that! It took weeks for the ink to come out of his coat!

I do it more for his safety than anything, I'd hate for him to eat something he's not supposed to and get sick or a blockage. Material things can be replaced, Maverick can't!

If I'm just running out for 10 minutes or so though I will leave him loose.

6 months....

had older dogs when wilson came joust was 10 and bob was 13....the funny thing is they would push his crate out to the living room....i even found it pushed into the bedroom once...i think he would cry and the older boys felt bad.....so i did short trips with him out maybe 20 min...and he was always in a bed with either bob or joust....

I still don't trust her with the older dogs when I'm not around. She can get rambuctious, or sometimes toy possesive, and I'm afraid she'll start a fight or just bug them or hurt them. She is 13 months and they are close to 13 years old.
