Anybody ever give their bulldog the antibiotic Bactrim??

Bactrim aka Septra
A sulfonamide antibiotic with trimethoprim in it.

Any feedback on this drug
or a good website describing drug information

Thanks
Darren

Bactrim was cheap, also vet wanted valium to be used

Bactrim was given to me in generic at a cheap price. But the valium I needed for Spencer had to be dispensed at my local pharmacy. He is on the valium for relaxation of his bladder sphincter to help with his straining

Darren

Vet did a urinalysis

Urinalysis came back normal. Vet did not pursue with a culture and sensitivity

Darren

It shouldn't be

as it is a very old medicine and comes in generic. Unless for dogs they have to use some special mixture of the 2 components for some reason. For people it is one of the cheapest antibiotics. Maybe request that it be called in to a people pharmacy, compare prices next time. Clavamox is not all that costly compared to the same med for people, Augmentin. I think Clavamox was like 1/3 the cost of Augmentin.

And by the way, it's VERY expensive.

n/m

Oreo is on it as we speak

She had another UTI and the vet put her on Bactrim after she had a bad reaction to the first antibiotic (not related to the Bactrim family). She gets it twice a day and is doing fine so far. We also put her on special food for UTI's.

Did he do a urine culture?

So he knows what it is sensitive to? Bactrim does treat UTI's well in general. My only experience with it was giving it the one time years ago.

See if anyone else has given it.

Treating UTI

Originally Spencer was on Keflex for upper resp infxn, then couple days later developed increased frequency in urination with presence of blood. Vet wants to give a more broad spectrum since Spence was on the Keflex and this new incident has occurred.

Just worry of any potential side effects experienced by any bull dog owners with Bactrim or aka Septra.

Thanks
Darren

What is he treating with it?

Cough or urine infection? Abby had no untoward reaction to it many years ago. But I don't hear of it prescribed very often in dogs. The links Vicki posted are concerning when you could likely use Clavamox which is just more expensive. Call the vet back and ask if you can use Clavamox if the links are concerning.

Thanks for the links

Much appreciated!!

I ask about Bactrim cause it was prescribed by the vet

I just want to see if anybody has used this medication with their bulldog and if there were any unusual occurrences that may of been experienced while on it.

Im always nervous when it comes to drugs

Thanks
Darren

I believe

that my previous bully got prescribed Bactrim for a bronchitis kennel cough type illness many years ago--like about 10-12. Most often I see Clavamox given first line more recently. I believe there are some side effects to Bactrim in dogs, but your vet will know this before prescribing. If you have some around your house and are thinking about giving to your bully, I would check with the vet first.

links to info. online

Here is a link to some information online. The third paragraph gets into detail about Bactrim.

http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dmedquestions.html

Also, this link focuses on a different breed of dog, but then states "any dog" within the article. Bactrim is also called Co-trimoxazole...which is referred to in this article.

Hope this helps, and hope your bullie is OK!

I tried to find info an the net ,

but so far this is the only statement I can find on bactrum....
"Bactrim(bactrum), an antibiotic, can permanently dry up tear ducts "...
is this something your vet recommended..or is it just a curiousity question?if I find any thing else I'll post it....good luck...ce
